Okay Bluesky, here's a reminder of who I am and what I'm about. I'm the author of a memoir about working as an Uber driver after my divorce and how the gig economy lures in and exploits vulnerable people.

On some Friday nights, I do a ride-along thread where I post about people I'm meeting.
Yellow and black cover of Drive: Scraping by in Uber's America, by Jonathan Rigsby. "This gripping read forces readers to finally see gig workers all around them, as well as to recognize how the middle class has become the Middle Precariat." -Alissa Quart, author of Bootstrapped and Squeezed

For the record, I would have preordered the deluxe edition of this game.

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

A meditation on the grief of this moment. Worth the read.

I’m tired of chaos. I’m dying for order. A machine that’s functioning. It’s parts working in symphony with each other.

Everything in its right place.

Nothing is now. No one is doing the job, let alone doing it well. I feel like there’s something they’re all in on. Something drives them.

ICE and CBP in particular have a type, and that type is "just following orders."

It's a superb movie, and the special effects hold up completely.

That's fantastic! Congratulations to her!

WITH ALT TEXT BECAUSE I WAS EXCITED AND FORGOT
A VIEW OF A FUTURISTIC CITY FROM A ROOFTOP, SHOWING THE CITY AT NIGHT AND LIT UP BUILDINGS. A WOMAN IN RED STANDS HOLDING A HELMET. IN THE DISTANCE, A BEACON OF LIGHT CUTS THROUGH THE SKY AND BURSTS THE CLOUDS.

TEXT AT THE BOTTOM SAYS PROTOMEN ACT III: THIS CITY MADE US

ACT 3 IS REAL AND IT'S RELEASING AND I'M GOING TO BE EXCITED AND YELL ABOUT IT. I HAVE WAITED 15+ YEARS FOR THIS.

I've only ever seen Hunt Brothers advertised in gas stations. Gas station pizza should not be part of the conversation.

That is something consumed as part of a journey to rock bottom.

The entire trajectory of Tennessee as nominally blue swing state that descended into bright red hellhole is mirrored in Vanderbilt's decisions about the university and the med center.

Diermeier, like Carol Swain, knows better but chooses to buy into the bullshit for status.

I don't donate.

A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon. It's the prequel to Priory of the Orange Tree. I have both but decided to read the prequel first for no other reason than that the dust jacket was nicer.

It started off slow, and I was getting frustrated. Then a mountain exploded.

My goal for the year was to read 25 books. I have surely not handicapped myself in this effort by choosing to read a 1,000 page fantasy epic.

Good on the flight crew that recognized that was an emergency before that thing's battery exploded and incinerated his finger at 30,000 feet.

I went to the Salvador Dali museum earlier this year, and they had an AI-powered homunculous of Dali that you could talk to and ask questions about his artwork.

It was one of the most unsettling things I've ever witnessed. Ghoulish in the extreme.

Also, please take a moment to consider buying my book Drive: Scraping by in Uber's America. It's about the gig economy and the way it abuses vulnerable people. It is highly rated and well reviewed.

James Comey and a budget shutdown and Tylenol and H1-B visas and ICE raids and the closure of the Department of education and USAID funding and a zillion other things are all separate bad things that are happening simultaneously.

That's because the entire house is on fire now, not just the stove.

The insistence that everything is a distraction from the one thing that you care about suggests that you are incapable of caring about something beyond your own pet interests.
ridetrips.bsky.social
My least favorite thing about this era of American history are the people who yell "this is a distraction from xyz..." at every news story.

It is entirely possible for 53 bad things to happen simultaneously. That's what happens when the government is run by goons intent on destroying everything.

Never has a war been more black and white than Vietnam vs the Khmer Rouge. What unbelievable monsters they were.
