This Buffalo Trace bourb—I mean, John J. Bowman bourbon, was good stuff indeed. Overpriced by the hype. But good bourbon. Cheers!

Sometimes I cheat on whiskey with apple brandy. Usually St George apple brandy. This Old-Fashioned is made with that, St Elizabeth Allspice Dram, and Regan’s Orange Bitters. I recommend it. Especially near sunset. Cheers!

This year’s St George Single Malt has arrived! Lot 25 celebrates 25 years of this annual release. My intro to it was Lot 17 and it’s been the annual holiday season bottle in my home ever since. Can’t wait to taste the latest. Cheers!

Whisky from New Zealand? Can’t wait to take this intriguing flight of single malts from Waiheke Whisky. Kia ora!

Well this is legit unusual. A rye whisky from Islay. Bruichladdich took a gamble on this when they distilled it 7 years ago. Proper notes to come but out of the gate I’d say the gamble was worth it. Sláinte!

I’m a tad late to this one, a Westward Whiskey Club release from a handful back. But I’m very much looking forward to catching up. Westward always hits it. Cheers!

An Elijah Craig barrel proof RYE! Aged 12 years 3 months and bottled at 108 proof. Rye spice, oak, buttery caramel, milk chocolate. I’m for it. Cheers!

Evidence of someone’s late night out. Couldn’t have been too rough—the bottle ended up politely atop the recycling bin rather than cracked on the sidewalk. And people think San Francisco has gone downhill. 😉 Cheers!

A rye from Islay? I’m there! Sláinte!

Four Roses is hands down one of the most autumnal bourbons going. Cheers!

This new Departure for the Hirsch Selected Whiskeys line is an in-house distilled single malt whiskey made from 100% barley. Proper notes to come. But up front this is sweet and grassy, with rustic milled grain notes, altogether very Northern California. Cheers!

Look at that familiar label closely. Not a barrel proof bourbon but a RYE! Aged 12+ years no less. Proof Hounds will lament the 108 proof. My days of being dazzled by the spectacle of 120+ proof whiskeys are behind me, so this one is right in my sweet spot. Can’t wait to give it a go. Cheers!

AI may end us but it does have some harmless uses—like finding a cocktail recipe for your Amontillado Sherry. The answer was quite literary, the Catcher In The Rye. I used High West Rendezvous Rye, Barbadillo 12y Amontillado, Felix Bigalette Amaro, Cointreau, Regan’s Orange Bitters. Cheers!

A good one for a chilly early evening. Old Potrero Rye finished in Cabernet casks. This humble malty monster with a sweet side keeps things warm. Cheers!

My first Hazelburn. (I’m often late to a party.) Proper notes coming soon but out of the gate this whisky strikes an intriguing balance between industrial and sweet. Sláinte!

I liked the 11y Overholt. I picked a bottle up after it had gone on sale, and it tasted like what I would hope any moderately priced bourbon—not rye—would taste like. Looking forward to seeing what one more year and a scootch higher proof does. Cheers!

This is just an incredible rye. I’m so very tempted to break my No Bunkering rule for this one... Cheers!

This 2017 BenRiach has continued to be a flavor journey. Months ago it was all industrial smoke and marmalade. Now it’s tasting very much of smoked lemons and caramel fudge on a rocky beach. What will it taste like in another month? Sláinte!

We’ll call this cocktail a Stone Fashioned—roughly applying Stone Fence ingredients to an Old-Fashioned template. See the second 📸 for the recipe I used, although I suspect 1.5oz bourbon to 0.5oz apple cider might be better. Of course a fancy vintage glass always improves any cocktail. Cheers!

I bought a bottle of this single barrel store pick in 2017. It was fine. Then in 2024 I picked it up again, forgetting I’d already had it. Same bourbon, but me with 7 more years on my palate. Proper notes to come, but out of the gate I think I like it better now than I did the first time. Cheers!

This K&L Faultline release is dubbed “Islay Mystery.” It’s labelled a “blend” because a teaspoon of something else was added. But one sip and there’s no doubt this is Ardbeg single malt—aged 26 years, bottled at cask strength. Proper notes coming soon. Sláinte!

Another bird down. This WT Rye SiB was quite good, though with its price north of the standard Russell’s Reserve Rye SiB and the quality being on par, I don’t see the incentive to pay more. I was glad to enjoy this, though, no question. Cheers!

Westward keeps churning out the hits. I recently finished a bottle of the excellent Trinity of Casks release, so I cracked this Acacia Cask Finished release. All the familiar Westward notes I love, slightly darker and accented by a mouthwatering tanginess from a zingy grapefruit zest note. Cheers!
