Ellis rules that the plaintiffs have standing for their case. She cites the "ongoing and sustained record of conduct" by federal agents gathered over the last month.

She further finds the plaintiffs have plausibly shown feds have "frustrated" efforts to "protect journalist safety."

Success! CUPE 3912 resolution was passed at CUPE
National Convention with broad support!
This means CUPE has to dedicate resources to lobby all levels of government for increased funding and a national education act and raise public awareness about post
secondary workers and to fight cuts to protect our jobs.
Swipe to read the full text! CUPE WILL

Renew campaigning through lobbying and mobilization of all levels of government for comprehensive, public post-secondary funding. In particular, CUPE will pressure the federal government to legislate a national Post-Secondary Education Act with statutory, accountable federal funding for post-secondary education.
Develop resources for locals and chartered organizations to raise public awareness of the value of CUPE’s Post-Secondary Education Workers, support efforts to fight post-secondary education cuts, and protect these members’ jobs.
BECAUSE
Post-secondary across Canada is in crisis, exacerbated by federal policies impacting international students and by chronic underfunding by both federal and provincial governments;
This crisis has led to ongoing job losses and increased precarity for academic, technical, trades, service and support staff CUPE members;
Stable and fair models of public funding are required to provide the education and research that drives the Canadian economy, supports families, and resources the country’s labour market, which are essential to supporting and retraining workers and communities impacted by the Trade War;
Inadequate public funding of the system results in poor quality education, cuts to the services students need for their success, and higher tuition fees that make education and training harder to access for working class families and young people.

A really good overview of the heartbreaking, enraging COVID-19 vaccination situation in Québec. There is unclear messaging, a lack of public engagement, and a focus on vaccination as an individual thing (vs public health). It doesn't need to be this way.

I realized after the fact that your talk is streaming either way—but yup, one is part of the University of Québec system, one isn't, but both are brilliant public institutions that do great stuff! (I live in MTL, which is why I know this.) Congrats on the event, looking forward to attending!

This is exciting! It seems to be at UQàM, though? (Université du Québec à Montréal and Université de Montréal are, confusingly, named similarly but are two different universities in two different parts of town.)

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Either way I have an R biostats code workshop somewhere, will have a look later. The biggest suggestion I have though is to just start doing things! R has a learning curve, but the Rstats community is super lovely.

OH HELL YES! I am not biostats, but I love R. A spreadsheet of some resources I love are here, and I have some more stuff at home (at a bar sneakily checking my phone). My university also runs workshops, which I found incredibly useful, which IIRC IU has? (Maybe?)

One of many terrible parts of this is Rutgers' utter uselessness in helping Professor Bray. Rutgers isn't alone: universities are failing their community members—faculty, staff, and students alike—when it comes to doxxing and digital safety. And they've been failing them for years.

Québec's COVID-19 vaccination campaign is now live.

For most in the province the vaccine will cost $150 - $180, and inclusion of those "at risk" and therefore eligible for a free-at-point-of-care vaccine does not include those with a diagnosis of long COVID.

I hope that's clarified in terms of past statements (below), and I'm also...it's wild to me to point to an AI and say "we actually don't provide any input." (I know moderation on a site this big is a massive thing, this is just wild to me, still.)
