Why does it feel like while I was growing up the message was always 'Screw the gatekeepers, democratise access' and for the last decade or more the realisation has been 'There were some gates we really should have worked harder to keep'?

War of Attrition gameplay had its foibles but it sure a held back death as an ultimate failure rather than a just the immediate consequence to poor play.
