Okay bluesky, help me out here - I'm looking for recommendations of books about folklore. Not stories (of giants or monsters etc), but the stuff like iron keeps fae away, don't step in a ring of mushrooms, lychgates, and that sort of thing. The truly everyday folklore. Any suggestions?

New blog post is up, all about writing habits and how to form them (or at least my thoughts on it)

A good habit
What is a good habit in writing? And how far should we push ourselves to attain it? You hear about well-known writers and their routines, which vary hugely, and yet each of them have their defender…

Is it bad that I'm thinking of abandoning my novel for a while? Got plenty of other ideas that excite me more at the minute. Current WIP feels like a complete mess, and I have no idea where to go with it or how to make it better. Wish these things came with a map and directions!

Love little bits of random word history
Etymology of the day: in the expression ‘just deserts’, ‘deserts’ is an old past participle of the French ‘deservir’, meaning ‘deserve’. To get your just deserts is to get what you deserve.

‘Desert’ in this sense is obsolete, which is why lexicographers see ‘just desserts’ popping up everywhere.

And here's the link to my blog and the latest post - my short story - The Ghost of Crest Hotel.
A short fantasy horror; an apprentice ghost hunter goes on their first solo job, but ends up with more than they bargained for.

...is the criticism. I don't remember the exact words, but I remember how they made me feel. So please remember when reading someones work, sometimes criticism is remembered far, far longer than praise. It took years for me to let anyone read my writing again; the hurt was stronger than my pride
2/3 I was very proud of what I wrote, more than anything else I remember doing at that time in my life. But I put a mild swear in it (oh my god or bloody hell) -character accurate, but not appropriate for an 8yr old. Apparently. I don't remember if I got praised for that story. All I do remember...

My first writing memory is from primary school, aged about 8, and we were told to write a version of how the chinese zodiac got its order. Very basically it's a race, so I decided to write it in the style of a horse-race commentator. Me, who never watched horse racing. Ever.

I am writing novels and short stories more now, but I still keep my theatre life ticking over. This is a concept image for a Robin Hood inspired play I hope to produce in the next year or so called Wolfshead

As if my tbr pile isn't big enough, I'm on the hunt for recommendations of new (in the last decade or so) fantasy that is NOT romantasy (I like it, but want some variety!). So, #BookSky please give me some of your favourites, bonus if you say what you loved about it. Thanks!

That feeling when you've spent hours reading and have to come back to the real world - it's a sense of disconnection that only happens with the best of books. You feel like if you just tried you could fly; you could see dragons; you could turn a corner and meet the love of your life. That is magic.
