Yes. That’s exactly correct. You cannot have an open firehose and also keep that data out of training sets.

If you want your conversation firewalled away, Discord is the option you want.

it would be trivial to save everything that comes through the firehose for use in training generative AI

the open design of atproto makes this possible and the culture of alt text on bluesky provides free human generated image labels

Bluesky revealed that they are using an automated image filtering system, ie something that uses AI, and people are losing their shit.

It is made even dumber because people (understandably) have feelings about their art/photos being by AI systems… except this is a public network.

10/6/23 was a travel day. I got home late and went straight to sleep. I woke up the morning of 10/7 and the world had changed.

Shock, horror, grief, anguish. Waiting to hear if family, friends, colleagues were safe. Terrified for the hostages dragged into Gaza. 🎗️ A future uncertain.

Look back at the Civil Rights era. Violence against peaceful protestors happened on the regular. Even so, the movement made a strategic choice to practice non violence in order to retain the moral high ground. It took time but it worked.
