Subway is a convenient shorthand for rapid transit. I am totally unconvinced that riders much care about how its aligned.

Ok and I didn't say they didn't! Subway means grade separated transit to people, it doesn't mean a particular alignment.

Thats just not what subway means when people talk about subway. New York's "subway" Toronto's "subway", both have significant above grade sections.

I think the point of a lot of what I've been saying re. light rail is that it struggles *anywhere* to be much better than buses *to the degree* it isn't blessed with grade separation (like you often see in Germany), so I just fundamentally disagree that the TC lines were really upgrades from buses.
