To Pinguin or not to Pinguin, that is the question.

I have a couple of incredibly robust ex CAD workstations. They are effectively unbreakable. But they wont run a native W11, because TPM.

So to a 'nix or a BSD or ......

And the question I have to ask is: what do I want them to do?

Here's a dramatically radical proposal for the UK.

a] reintroduce Lord Chancellor's role as censor and
b] nationalise all media channels: TV, Radio, and online news sites.
c] require all social media to pay annual license fee in direct proportion to the number of UK users they have.

inspired by this, I have done a free extract of this section of the book here. it is about understanding that *with all its problems* the BBC is as important for our intellectual health as the NHS is for our physical health:

With Thanksgiving now rapidly approaching we feel obliged to ask ....

Will The Turkey pardon the turkey, or will the turkey pardon The Turkey?

Should either be allowed to do either?

On poor UX design.

When using Bluesky via a browser on a desktop machine rather than via the App some 60-65% of the screen territory is wasted and there's no ability to adjust spacing or territory.

Calling it crap would be polite.

Looking forward to hosting @arvd.bsky.social on Thursday evening at UCL for a discussion of what The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the wisdom of Douglas Adams can teach us about modern politics. Tickets are free, but you need to book. Hope to see you there. Here's the link:

In the next 12-24 months we are likely to see two crashes.
If they coincide or overlap then the impacts may become catstrophic at the global level.

1] AI Hype will deflate drastically: almost all investment in new data centres will have been for nothing.
2] Crypto is very likely to deflate.

#food #foodie Here in the UK we have a strong tradition of cooking with various sea vegetables. By which I do _NOT_ mean seaweeds: there's a good and healthy tradition of that but it's not what I'm talking about.

"The company said its IT complied with industry standards and it had taken out insurance against cyber-attack."

By definition, if hackers got in then IT didn't comply. As the story indicates, a weak password was permitted. That's contrary to ALL security advice.

Just had a flyer delivered from another fascist political party; "The National Housing Party" whose leader - one John Lawrence - appeals to me for funding saying he wishes to stop immigration and end sex education in schools.

He says nothing about how to create more homes.
