Morning! I'm starting The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones today.

Need a reason for why a protagonist is so detestable or something to connect with and in Hemming's Thomas, I struggled. I get what it was for, showing ennui of the self-absorpstion of your own life, but I struggled to engage with it. The shots are great and the central part is interesting.

Ha thanks! Definitely been needing reading for sheer escapism this year.

Book 53 - The Children of Gods and Fighting Men by Shauna Lawless

An excellent blend of historical fiction and fantasy. It's not until now that I realised how much I craved a properly political story. I loved our two main protagonists in their own ways. Excited to continue!

The strength of the performances in this, is what elevates the film. The strength of More's convictions and the impact of them are plain to see and works well in the final courtroom scene. I wanted more of a sense of More's inner turmoil and the dialogue at times felt a little dry.

What a film that is! Only saw it for the first time last year.

Yeah definitely - a much needed break!

Ahh man! Hope it all calms down a bit for you, so you can enjoy other things again.

Sorry to hear that! I guess it's the start of the festive season, so less time to enjoy our hobbies.

I guess for me, having been on holiday sort of broke up my film watching streak and just need to get back into the swing of things.

I've only heard good things about this and 100 pages in and I can see why!

The final half hour of this film is excellent, from the set piece battle to the final showdown. The staging of this is excellent throughout and I mean, the score! The film is elevated with the sprinkling of humour throughout. I did flag a bit in the middle, maybe that's just a me thing.

Book 52 - The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz

Published in 2013, it's hard not to compare what she's writing with what was happening in Egypt during the Arab Spring. A man is shot, seeking approval for an operation and has to queue for it. Orwellian elements and deadpan humour and community.

This is a film that doesn't shy away from the brutality warfare & the civilian casualties involved. It's clearly an anti-colonial film, but at the same time, it doesn't glorify what the resistance is doing. Through the oppression and violence of colonial rule, it only breeds more violence.

Ooft! This was a tough one to sit through. The film is predominantly told from the perspective of a donkey and its first owner Marie, as both are helpless at defending themselves against the abuse thrown in their direction. It's honestly painful to watch at times and perhaps too much so.
