Retired teacher of English. Busy doing stuff. 📚 🇺🇦 🇪🇺
Full disclosure: no interest in pets, crypto and sport. And don’t get me started on ludicrous names for shades of paint.
Anne Tyler just gets people. Magical stuff.

After four editions under its new presenter, I feel the much-loved ‘In Our Time’ in not just in safe hands but in the best possible hands.

Nope, I don’t get it. The most histrionic, unbelievable novel I’ve ever read. They all need to sit down and have a cup of Yorkshire tea. The semaphore version was an improvement.

The bar for best history book read in 2026 has been set high. Very high. A fabulous telling of the rivalry and clashes that marked the lives of Richard II and Henry IV. Fascinating account of events previously only familiar to me via Shakespeare. Read and relish.

Couldn’t agree more - about the book and its author. And this is a great comparative read:

A fascinating book, one that will stay with me. Not just the history of a person or a particular place at a particular time; but an exploration of what we can and can not know about the past. And of the qualities needed for survival and achievement. Hugely recommended.

Don’t know of any generic term; but sometimes my 66 year-old self still wishes his 8 year-old self hadn’t seen this bunch. (Accept no inferior remake.)

Two musical offerings.
A clavichord once played by Mozart; and a piano owned by Beethoven and subsequently Liszt.
Both in the wonderful National Museum in Budapest.
