If you look at old restaurant menus from the turn of the century they were common, usually pickled veggies and celery. In the 70s, my great aunt always had one on the table for formal dinners. And here's a pair from Russell Wright's 1930's American Modern dinnerware.

To be clear, they're not just "demolishing the entrance" to the East Wing. They're pulling the whole thing down, including the office of every First Lady since Roslyn Carter. Just look at the renderings. At best, they'll strip it to its frame. And they have no authority to do any of this.
