Found a self-sown tomato plant late summer in a garlic bed. Popped it into the #greenhouse where it’s producing in low light and cool temps. This variety was brought to WI by Lithuanian immigrants and grows well along the lakeshore and up north. It’s named Sheboygan and is one of my favorites.

This had me up all night - the easy swing of a weapon towards a neighbor.

Couple tables of chicken grass sprouting and bags of kale for winter harvest. Our 24 hens eat green year round. #greenhouse #chickens

My greatest form of #resistance has been removing myself from the industrial food chain - best I can.

I printed off lists to take with me when shopping as a reminder that WI food insecurity will increase next month. Choose low sugar, low sodium items if possible. In our northern county, a local grocery store and family dollar offer totes to fill that are delivered to local pantries.

Growing food is more than sustenance, it’s an act of resistance and #compost is firepower. #gardening

I fret daily over the potential destruction of the Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest and northern Wisconsin. The defacement of unfettered mining/logging/development would make this unique #wisconsin landscape unrecognizable.

#zone4 and picked my last tomatoes today. Processed over 350 lbs this fall with no green fruit left on the vines. Crazy long season.

Also nabbed some super sweet Marquettes I’ll cook down for grape molasses.

Canning day! Spicy tomato juice with ingredients harvested from our gardens/greenhouse/hot boxes including tomatoes, horseradish, Meyer lemon juice, bay leaf, parsley, beet, carrot, green/poblano/jalapeño peppers, garlic and onion. #gardening #greenhouse

Trying something new. Edelweiss grape concentrate for juice and sparkling drinks this winter.

Many indicators but no #morel during my morning forage. This time last year heaps of verpa bohemica were easily found.

Prelude to fall’s ripe berries and an abundance of cedar waxwings and partridge that devour the fruit.

A northern leopard frog has lived in my greenhouse for two years. It spends most days in a mass of beet greens, Swiss chard and lemon balm. It’s my canary. #greenhouse

Mallards to the right, red breasted mergansers to the left. Lovely when migratory birds return.

Weekly fauna heard, seen or both —
#cougar #loon #merganzer #barredowl
#coyote and lots of deer roaming in the ice storm wreckage eating
hemlock tops. Some red pine stands are 60-75% damaged.

Little #greenhouse in the big woods. The wood boiler worked overtime this winter keeping flats of grasses growing for the hens, a lemon and lime tree fruiting and flowering and Swiss chard, beet greens and kale renewing for months and months.

So it begins #garlic
Planting my own cloves for two yrs. I share bulbs with all my pickling friends, supply parents and siblings for the year, have 3 yrs of black garlic stashed,
and enough culinary bulbs to last until spring garlic is ready. Such a joy!

Designed my food space using permaculture principles 5 yrs ago. Many laughed at me, confused by the time investment and dedication. #greenhouse, 3 fenced acres, 40 grapevines, plum/apple/cherry/pear trees, raspberries, strawberries, hops, 24 hens, raised beds, root veggies, all rotated and organic.

I lived on the shore of #LakeMichigan for over a decade and experienced giant drifts of rotting green algae fortified from nutrient pollution upstream. The putrid odor haunts me but still wasn’t as bad as being downwind to CAFO lagoons.

Winter greenhouse. Boiler is stoked, ever bearing limes and lemons are fruiting/flowering and forty grass flats for the hens are rotating.

I popped a couple tumbling tom junior tomato plants that seeded and rooted themselves out of the garden. Now 2nd gen under 9 months.
