I'm giving a free public talk asking 'How certain is certain enough?' at @lshtm.bsky.social on Monday 24th November at 5.30pm, as part of the Global Health Lecture Series. From epidemic response and clinical trials to online misinformation and AI, I'll look at how truth emerges – and why it falters.
How certain is certain enough? | LSHTM
When faced with a new health threat, there are three crucial questions we must consider. What is going on? What can we do about it? And how can we communicate these things effectively? This talk will

This is exactly the case for me. It’s both the requirement for me to always carry something and the implication that anyone with any modicum of power could then demand it (I.e you can’t use this service unless you do). That would be a major change and very open to abuse.

For those interested in Masters in lab and field based research in infectious disease we have 3 fantastic programmes to choose from MSc Immunology, medical parasitology and entomology and medical microbiology. They benefit from very flexible module choices and summer projects in UK and abroad!

Congratulations! Great to also see such a well thought out policy. Some things wouldn’t translate well for institutions in UK but lots of examples of really good practice to emulate.

Delighted to share the final version of Richard Zhou's study on how the CD163 scavenger receptor cleans up after toxic haemoglobin spills out from our blood cells. An amazing grabber mechanism!

I like the idea that philosophers need write like they are posting on twitter and therefore need to hedge against all possible ways of people deliberately misunderstanding them!

Our latest story describes the amazing evolutionary battle between malaria parasite and human. The parasite evolved RIFINs to bind inhibitory KIR receptors and suppress immune cell function while humans have activating KIR receptors to bind these RIFINs to kill parasites!

Yes as I found providing fathers access to leave via a transferable entitlement, as UK’s SPL, exacerbates gendered parenting norms and does not provide parents means to imagine the feasibility of sharing leave / care in practice (for shorter read!: bristoluniversitypressdigital.com/view/journal...)

But it’s not day to day spending so it isn’t from the same pot. It also has less effect on credit rating as it is an asset purchase. I think the OBR or IFS actually had a piece on this in response to Corbyn’s manifesto. I just tried to look for it but must have been on my deleted twitter!

The purchase cost associated with nationalisation becomes almost irrelevant. As long as market rate is paid, money is spent but government now has an asset that is directly equivalent in value (assuming we continue to need water). The only important question is whether it will be run better.
