In Kamigawa there was a man named Tezzeret. Many moons before the events of this story, Tezzeret was ordered to steal a portal to other worlds known as the Planar Bridge. He did do by melding it with his body, but at the cost of it decaying his body over time.

But Elesh Norn needed more. With overwhelming might her forces defeated the two most resistant Praetors and their forces, while the remaining two were easily convinced to join Norn's side. With this great victory, Elesh Norn became the Mother of Machines, the highest power in all of New Phyrexia.

In the battle that saw the New Phyrexian's conquer Mirrodin, Norn captured an angel known as Atraxa. Seeing her as a worthy adversary, Norn decided to reward her with compleation.

The process of compleation transformed Atraxa into a Phyrexian, and under Norn she became a symbol of Phyrexian unity.

As New Phyrexia was formed in Mirrodin, Elesh Norn's influence grew. She created a faction of Phyrexians devoted to the teachings of Yawgmoth and to spreading those beliefs far and wide. Even if they had to mutilate and reform those who did not believe into something worthy of existence.

Today's #storyoftheday, The rise of Elesh Norn, the mother of machines.

In the plane of Mirrodin there were 5 suns, one sun for each color of magic, and from these 5 suns 5 praetors were formed. With the mana of the white sun, Elesh Norn was born.

The M4 was preceded by the M3 Grant tank, which had it's barrel placed in the hull instead of in the turret on top. This was because the US needed to build tanks extremely quickly when they suddenly joined the war, and putting the gun in the hull was just faster production wise.

However, all of those tanks paled in comparison to the raw firepower of the T-34 and Panther. But the good news was, America had entered the war by then, and they spare no expense in firepower.

The US supplied Britain with M4 Sherman tanks, which made up for the lack of firepower in droves.

This began a tank arms race between the Soviets and Germans, with both upgrading their tanks to 85 and 88 mm guns respectively. At the same time, the Soviets released what was known as the Stalin heavy tank, which touted an insane 122 mm gun, talk about a bunker-buster!

And now, some stats to show the leaps and bounds. In 1943, Germany introduced the Panther Medium tank. This tank had a barrel velocity of 936 meters PER SECOND (wicked fast!), compared to the Panzer IV's 384 meters per second. It was also much heavier, but well worth the weight in armor.

Let's get back to tanks specifically. After Germany's invasion of Russia, tank innovation RAMPED UP. In 1942, the Panzer IV and Soviet T-34 were given crazy powerful barrels and even heavier armor. These upgraded barrels were designed for high velocity fire, meaning shells were being slung fast!

These small divisions were made up of Panzers, infantry in vehicles, artillery, and recon. Everything a tank needs in one small battalion! These Panzer divisions were absolute MONSTERS in battle, and although only 6 existed by the start of WW2, every other country organized to follow their example.

AND NOW FOR THE MAIN EVENT! It's time for WW2.

Straight out of the gate Germany hits hard with its line of the infamous Panzers (translates to armor). What made these tanks powerful wasn't their armor or guns but instead the fact that they were organized into smaller units called Panzer Divisions.

Sidenote, this misconception led to the hilarious design of the TOG, which will become it's own story at some point. Here's a photo of the real thing and a hilarious skin from World of Tanks.

However, during this time the biggest advancement in tank weaponry occurred. With the advancement of tank armor more firepower was required. Germany and the Soviets realized this first, and created guns that fired 75mm shells instead of mounted machine guns.

I like to call these bunker-busters.

And some context. Between WW1 and 2 tanks advanced rather slowly. The most interesting tanks from this time were both Soviet tanks, the BT and T-26. The T-26 in particular was interesting because unlike all other tanks this one had light armor, meaning it couldn't be used as infantry support.

After WW1 ended, multiple countries ended up following France's example with the Renault F.T. and constructed lighter tanks that copied the aforementioned model. These included the American's M1917 Light Tank and the Italian's Fiat 3000 (Wish I could take one of those to work, bring 'em back Fiat).
November 13, 2024 at 4:50 AM
But the innovation didn't stop there, as the most widely used tank by 1918 was actually the French Renault F.T. This tank was only 6 tons, and was mainly used as fire support for infantry and was the main tank used after WW1. This came with the idea that tanks should be used as backup for infantry.
November 13, 2024 at 4:50 AM
And this demand was answered in 1918 with the Medium-A. This tank was 14 tons (wow!), had a max speed of 8 mph/13 kph (speedy!) and a range of 80 miles (double that of a cybertruck!) Despite it's poor stats, this was revolutionary innovation at the time, and paved the way for even more improvements.

On November 20th, 1917, British tanks achieved a major victory and boost in reputation. In the Battle of Cambrai, 474 British tanks were instrumental in securing victory for the allies. However, they also showed themselves as incredibly slow and heavy, causing demand for a faster model to grow.
November 13, 2024 at 4:50 AM
France began developing their own tanks soon after the British, and were made similar to the British Prototypes. That is to say, they were also just metal armor welded on to a tractor a-la Killdozer (but not as badass). These were known as Schneider tanks, and they wouldn't see action until 1917.
November 13, 2024 at 4:50 AM
The first prototype was named Little Willie, shortly followed by the second, named Big Willie. Both of these tanks were extremely heavy and slow, but were able to cross over wide trenches with their long tread belts. The Big Willie would soon become the Mark 1, and be deployed on September 15, 1916.

The first conception of the modern tank came in 1885, where James Cowen, a British Engineer, took out a patent for an armed and armored vehicle based on the steam tractor. This lead to the blueprint of James Cowen's Battle Car, the objectively funniest tank design I've seen.
November 13, 2024 at 4:50 AM
But as weapons developed, the protected vehicle had to adapt. This lead to the battle car, proposed in 1335 by Guido Da Vigevano, and later the multi-cannoned circular vehicle proposed by Leonardo Da Vinci (pictured). You may recognize the latter from the game Totally Accurate Battle Simulator.

While many believe the tank was invented during WW1, the concept of a protected vehicle dates back the siege tower, used by the Assyrians in the 9th century. The tower allowed groups of infantry to roll up to castle walls without risk of taking arrows from archers.
