Jacob Armstead Lawrence was an American painter known for his portrayal of African-American historical subjects and contemporary life. Lawrence referred to his style as "dynamic cubism", an art form popularized in Europe which drew great inspiration from West African and Meso-American art. For his compositions, Lawrence found inspiration in everyday life in Harlem. [1] He brought the African-American experience to life using blacks and browns juxtaposed with vivid colors. He also taught and spent 16 years as a professor at the University of Washington.

Sometimes you buy an old book for teaching & this happens: inscribed by Alain Locke (to who?) in recognition of work 'pour l'Afrique', with letters from Senghor & Souru-Migan Apithy about the 1945 French Constituent Assembly. The practice of diaspora. I want to teach a whole course about this book!

This is a black and white photograph of Gordon Parks. He is holding a camera. This is a black and white photograph titled American Gothic. It was made by Gordon Parks in 1942. After experiencing blatant racism in Washington DC, Parks made an extensive photo survey of Ella Watson, her family and their experiences living and working in our nation's capitol. The series culminated with this photograph - which shows Watson, an older African American woman, looking directly into the camera, holding a mop and broom, and standing in front of an American flag. The photograph evokes the Grant Wood painting of the same title. This is a color photograph titled "Department Store." It was made by Gordon Parks in Mobile, Alabama in 1956. The photograph shows a fashionably dressed African American woman and her young daughter standing beneath a bright red neon sign that reads "COLORED ENTRANCE." This photograph was part a Life Magazine story about American segregation and is also included in the photo book titled "Gordon Parks, Segregation Story" publish by Steidl. This is a black and white photograph titled "Red Jackson." It was made by Gordon Parks in 1948. It is part of a Life Magazine photo essay titled "Harlem Gang." It shows a profile of a you African American man looking looking through a broken window to the street.

An African American woman (the artist's cousin Kathy Williams) strongly faces forward and takes up the center of the solid gold space. She has a beautiful Afro hairstyle and wears a short-sleeved black dress with orange stripes. Inspired by lyrics by Nina Simone, the painting’s title evokes, with a touch of humor, the traditional “Lord” and “Mother” of the Christian faith. The style of the painting is inspired by Byzantine and early Italian Renaissance paintings. In them, gold-leaf backgrounds signal the divine, conveying through material splendor the importance of the devotional object, prompting wonder and meditation. Lawdy Mama’s rounded top, crafted by Hendricks himself, echoes the geometry of Renaissance art and frames the sitter’s afro-as-halo. Hendricks learned the painstaking process of applying gold leaf after returning from Europe in 1966. Noting the delicacy of the precious material, he wrote, “The slightest wind or heavy breath will send it fluttering all over the place.” Though he acknowledged finding inspiration for his metallic paintings in gold-leaf panels from centuries prior, Hendricks also appreciated them as “shiny things” that appeal to viewers regardless of their knowledge of historical precedents.
