The end of civilization right here IMO. It’s only a skip from this to awards for full LLM books. And… just WHO collects an award even for “partial LLM-created works” when an LLM is a stolen amalgamation of thousands of writers? 🤑
I'm so disappointed in @sfwa.org for this. I understand that by requiring disclosure of partial LLM-created works, as their announcement states, means SFWA's letting "nominators and the voters" make the final decision. BUT YOU'RE STILL ALLOWING SUCH WORKS ON THE NEBULA AWARDS FINAL BALLOT! 1/
Another Nebula Awards nomination cycle is in full swing, and the addition of poetry and comics, along with the presence of LLMs in industry, required careful consideration.

Read on, and vote well!

We trust our voters & look forward to what they choose to celebrate.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

The US has already lost 12% of its current income due to climate change. Most studies project future losses, but new research from the University of Arizona has calculated the costs to date.

Mood: Windy night. I like the crisp air and breeze… been standing outside for a hour just soaking it in. It’s very Lynchian in a “Blue Velvet” way. Matter of fact, I’m parked just a few blocks the #DavidLynch residence — waiting to pick up my son from a pre-pro mtg at a filmmaker’s house.

Tons of heartwarming #RobReiner stories today in the wake of his tragic end. Here's a great one about the making of THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION.
When Rob Reiner was on his all-time epic run at the start of his career, he had an opportunity to read a script that was looking for a production partner, and he lost his mind for it. He decided Castle Rock had to have it, no matter what.

Date night w/ my wife to see #THESHINING #IMAX last night. Stunning. Flawless. I practically have it memorized, but I'd never seen it on the big screen--and now I've seen it on the biggest. The #Kubrick /Alcott steadicam shots and zooms still freak me out.

Last year I surprised the family w/ my own Jólabókaflóð, the Icelandic tradition of Christmas eve book gifting. I included a short write up on the tradition. My daughter likes horror (wonder why) and wants to read #IT by #StephenKing, so maybe it'll be a scary 2025 Jólabókaflóð. 👻🎄📚

Doing another proof of my manuscript and I found the funniest typo I think I've ever made: "He shuffled onto the baloney..."

Uh...balcony, not baloney. Must've had food on the mind. 🥪 😆

Case in point: I ditched #Twitter -- still won't call it #X -- 2+ yrs ago. I laugh at it now: all bots, incels and MAGAts. #BlueSky is awesome, I check in every day. Nothing but great minds here.
The only surefire way to stop oligarchs buying up the things we love is to drop those things the moment oligarchs buy them & that requires changing habits and massive self-discipline.
It means going to alternatives that might not be quite as good or convenient.
It’s really hard. But there it is.

Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.
