The federal government is set to release its latest monthly hiring numbers this week. Ahead of that, Kevin Hassett, the White House national economic director, appeared to try to downplay the significance of any poor showing in the data. In an appearance on CNBC on Monday, Hassett said that a set of forces — rising economic growth, wider adoption of artificial intelligence and broader changes wrought by President Trump’s immigration policies — together could yield “slightly smaller job numbers.” Hassett added that “one shouldn’t panic if you see a sequence of numbers that are lower than you’re used to, ​because, again, population growth is ​going down and productivity growth is skyrocketing,” explaining that it was “an unusual ​set of circumstances.”

While there are many reasons for increasing farm bankruptcies and decreasing profits, “it is clear that the current administration’s actions, along with congressional inaction, have increased costs for farm inputs, disrupted overseas and domestic markets, denied agriculture its reliable labor pool, and defunded critical ag research and staffing,” the letter warned.

Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, criticized the Trump administration’s reaction to killings by federal agents in Minneapolis. “What I think the administration could do better is the tone with which they’re describing this — that immediately when an incident like this happens, they come out guns blazing, that ‘We took out a violent terrorist, hooray!’” he said on his podcast on Monday. “And the problem is, particularly for someone not paying attention, if you’re being told this is a mom of three and there’s no indication, you know, she’s not waving an ISIS flag or doesn’t have a suicide vest around her, escalating the rhetoric doesn’t help and it actually loses credibility.”

The federal judge who heard arguments earlier today about Minnesota’s request to expel immigration agents is asking the federal government to submit another written brief, suggesting that no ruling is imminent. The judge, Kate M. Menendez, a Biden appointee, gave Trump administration lawyers until Wednesday evening to address, among other things, the assertion that the administration’s efforts are intended to “punish plaintiffs for adopting sanctuary laws and policies.”

A federal appellate panel said on Monday that it would continue to block a district judge’s injunction that had placed restrictions on federal agents’ interactions with protesters in Minnesota. The three-judge panel said the injunction was “too broad” and “too vague.” The panel was made up of two judges appointed by President George W. Bush and one appointed by President Trump. One of the Bush appointees issued a partial dissent.

A Trump administration lawyer told a federal judge that state authorities don’t have a right to investigate the shooting. “This whole event rose out of a federal immigration matter, was conducted by federal officers, doing their federal duty, and the aftermath — whatever happened – is a federal matter.” Alex Pretti was a U.S. citizen with no criminal record.

Most ICE agents do not receive specialized training in crowd control, according to a 2021 report by the Government Accountability Office. Neither do agents at the F.B.I.; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the U.S. Marshals Service, the report found. Thousands of law enforcement officers from those agencies have also been assigned to the immigration crackdown. Border Patrol agents do receive more extensive training in crowd control. Federal tactics for making immigration arrests have also changed substantially, current and former officials said. In previous administrations, ICE tried to take a more targeted approach. That could involve carrying out several days of surveillance before approaching a suspect, trying to identify the safest place to make an arrest. But the administration’s demand for as many as 3,000 arrests per day has significantly reduced the time available for that kind of careful preparation.

Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, said in a statement that Senate Democrats would vote to block a bipartisan spending package that would fund the Department of Homeland Security and other parts of the government. The Senate is set to take up the measure, which includes $10 billion for ICE, ahead of a shutdown deadline at the end of January. “Senate Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included,” he said.

National guard will be in neon vests
Minnesota National Guard members deployed in Minneapolis to guard a federal building and a neighborhood where federal agents shot and killed a man on Saturday morning will wear neon reflective vests. State officials said this is being done so residents can distinguish National Guard soldiers from federal agents involved in the immigration crackdown, many of whom have been wearing uniforms similar to those worn by members of the military.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Minnesota National Guard be deployed “due to the potential for continuing and growing conflict related to today’s federal agent-involved shooting.” Sheriff Dawanna Wit said in a statement: “Their presence is meant to help create a secure environment where all Minnesotans can exercise their rights safely, including the right to peacefully protest.” Hennepin County includes Minneapolis.

For the millionth time, “sanctuary city” term must be abandoned. They’re doing what the constitution requires - government can’t commandeer states to execute federal law per 10th amendment. Maybe the complicit cities need to be called suckers or Vichy

President Trump said on social media that Venezuela will “only” purchase “American Made Products, with the money they receive from our new Oil Deal.” He added, “In other words, Venezuela is committing to doing business with the United States of America as their principal partner.” He listed agricultural products, medicine and energy equipment as examples of the kinds of products he expects Venezuela to buy exclusively from the United States. There was no immediate confirmation of his statement from Venezuela.

One boy had a Venezuelan flag draped around his shoulders as the group watched for any sign of ousted President Nicolás Maduro, who had arrived earlier. Alexander Silva, 36, a warehouse worker from Newburgh who fled Venezuela in 2022, brought his family to witness history. “I wanted them to see that this really had happened,” Silva said in Spanish, “that the dictatorship had been demolished.”
