Associate profesor in Physical Oceanography at the University of Iceland. Trying to understand through observations how mixing shapes the different properties of the water masses in the ocean through mesoscale processes.

Yep, no Internal Waves (IW) would be represented with Boussinessq, aka, no stratification. Perhaps it i a balance between the dispression and the initial condition...
rocangel.bsky.social
I think internal waves should be investigated, I have no idea how is the stratification at the time but it would be worth looking at the internal wave dispersion relation and see if this matches the scales :)

We are entering a new era for tsunami observations and model validation-- The SWOT era! Thanks a lot @baptistegomb.bsky.social for reaching out, this was a fun collaboration. Also great working with @diegosismologo.bsky.social and @valah.bsky.social. @haskoliislands.bsky.social

Superb observation by the SWOT altimetry satellite of the July 30 #tsunami. Data acquired ~1h after the M8.8 Kamchatka earthquake show the waves propagating across the Pacific with a great agreement with @rocangel.bsky.social's model!

sorry I did not answer this, but the answer is yes, it is amaizing how they can reproduce eddies, Randall Leveque, the creator of GeoClaw has great simulations with that

The greatest hotspot for resonance on the WestCoast!

Thanks Alice,
It is a one-slab source based on the USGS parameters. Following typical examples from GeoClaw, one could find the geometry (400x100km). Still waiting for more information to update the solution.

I think it is quite long, 400km x 100km, it is just the fast one-slab solution, we do not have a solution from USGS yet, standing by but will update soon :)

Tsunami resulting from a M 8.7 Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. Preliminar solution from USGS and GeoClaw model. @haskoliislands.bsky.social

Full video of the tsunami in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka, Russia, following the 8.7 earthquake. Wave seems incoming and a few meters at least.

The Ocean around us (In Iceland) is boiling! This month (May 2025) has exceed the number of high intensity Marine Heat Waves, I guess the nice weather comes with some price, hopefully this is not boiling the fish in the nearby sea... @haskoliislands.bsky.social

Let's make my first post be a provocative one :) --my research life in a single picture.
