I remember the first time I went back in time. I was in first grade, and I got a math test back. I was disappointed with how many answers I got wrong. I wanted so much to try taking it again. The memory of when I took it the first time was right next to me. It felt so real, like I could touch it. In my mind I could see my hand writing my name at the top of the page. It wasn't fair that I couldn't go back. Look, I know that sounds pretty silly, but I was just a little kid, ok? I didn't know that one math test wasn't a big deal. Anyway, I felt a meltdown coming on. That's when it gets so hard to think, and sometimes I don't like what I decide to do. I tried so hard to control it. I don't like me when I'm having a meltdown. I tensed all up and I closed my eyes. After a bit, the feeling started to pass, and I opened my eyes. There was the test. My name was on it, but… the rest of it was blank! I couldn't believe what had happened. The memory of getting the graded test back was right beside me, just in the opposite direction, and there I was, exactly how I remembered being when I first took the test. It was better than eating a mouthful of candy on a roller coaster! I didn't really do any better on the test the second time. It turns out you have to know the answers to do better on a test. Classic first-time time traveler mistake.

I just had a thought, Angela. You know how I wondered what happens to other people when I travel to one of my memories? Well, I'm not special. What happens to the “me” that was there the second before when I go back? I'm so confused. Do I just disappear in that timeline? Does the timeline just stop existing? Do I go all zombie-like? Or does that “me” keep on going through life, only it's not the real me, just some kind of copy that acts like me? Is that what's going on with everyone? Am I making lots of copies of everyone? I guess now you understand why there is no one who understands time travel less than a time traveler.

After Mr. Armstrong was done with the lesson and the children started doing the assigned problems, Mr. Armstrong called Sophia to his desk. He half whispered to her, “Good job on that problem you solved in front of the class. I’ve been watching you, and you have a lot of potential. A lot of potential! All you have to do is start applying yourself.” She knew Mr. Armstrong was trying to help, but his words still hurt. She was trying as hard as she knew how. Why couldn’t he see that? She went back to her desk and stared at the ceiling. The tiles were always there for her.

I wrote this by jotting down everything that went on in my head as I did a math problem. I never heard about dyscalculia until college and when I was reading what people with it said it was like I thought, "Wait, numbers don't do things like that in your head for everybody?"
A little while later, in math class, Mr. Armstrong called on Sophia to divide 215 by 0.4. The 21 kept on screaming to Sofia that it equaled 3×7, while the 5 smugly said it was prime. Sophia knew of no math problems where that information would come in handy, since the 21 and the 5 were two parts of the same number. “Uh, I guess you start by dividing 2 by 0.4 but I don't know what that is.” Mr. Armstrong reminded her to get rid of the decimals in the divisor. “Right, I knew that. So that becomes 4 into twenty-one fifty.” As soon as she said that, 50 said to her that it was 5×10, or 5×2×5. Sophia tried to concentrate. “So then you take the 21 and you divide by 4 and you get…” 50 said that it wasn’t done and that it was rude to interrupt it. It said that another way to look at it was 5×5 was 25, and that meant that 50 was 2×25. “Two times twenty five,” Sophia said. The class laughed. “No wait, 4. I mean 5. Subtract 20 and you get 1. Bring down the 5.” Mr. Armstrong marked the board as instructed. Sophia tried to remember how many times 4 goes into 15 but she couldn’t help but notice how pointy the 1 Mr. Armstrong wrote was. “3? Yeah, subtract 12 and you get 3. That’s right because that’s less than 4. Bring down the 0.” Sophia took a deep breath. She had this. She went to divide 30 by 4, but first she had to count the points on the 3. There were three of them, all along the left side. The zero didn’t have any points. She liked the fact that both digits had the same number of points as what they represented. “Sophia?” Mr. Armstrong said. “Did we lose you?” “I’m here.” Sophia felt a little of something she didn’t understand. “Right. 4×8 is 32, but that’s too much so go for 7. 4×7=28. Subtract 28 from 30 and you get 2. Looks like we need decimals. Write the decimal point and bring down a 0.” It took Mr. Armstrong a bit to catch up. Finally, all that was left was 4 into 20. Sophia knew that one. Sophia looked right at the 20 and the 20 didn’t even try to argue with her. “And then you get a 5 and we’re done.” She read the top line. “The answer is 317.5.” “Where did that come from?” Sophia immediately thought. “I mean 537.5,” she said. “Well done, Sophia. That’s correct.” Sophia took another deep breath. She was exhausted.

Blue bordered Apple Paperbacks edition of I Want To Go Home! by Gordon Korman. Rudy Miller is lying on his bunk in Cabin 13 with his feet propped on a red duffel bag. His hands are clasped behind his neck and his whole presentation is very lackadaisical. Two other boys are close by, looking at him.
