True... but then again maybe a health and safety report prior to commencing the Webway project wouldn't have been a bad idea.

Yes absolutely. (Unusually for someone in their mid 40s I also had a grandfather who fought in ww1, and was wounded at the Somme... though he died the year before I was born)

Yes. Historically this usually didn't end well... cardinal wolsey for example

The situation can reverse another 10 times between now and then.

Unfashionable on here probably, but we are actually also still very good at financial and professional services.

That's a hard no from me. Although I do find Toblerone a bit too sweet, I think the culprit is the chocolate itself not the nougat- have you tried the dark chocolate one?

Yes. The useful idiots did their work well.

In fairness, I think most CEOs do work hard at their companies. I share your incredulity that this clown gets away with being CEO of multiple huge companies and clearly doing f all for most of them most of the time. Presumably they are better off without his idiocy.

Personally: Trump - ignorant/doesn't care; Kennedy - deranged; tech bro enablers - actively malevolent (read Snow Crash, then imagine thinking this was a positive vision of a future to be sought)

Yes. However, good on the person he is quoting for stating the obvious but rarely said re Musk. I've often spoken to people who criticize Musk, but feel they have to caveat by saying 'well of course he's a genius, but...' why do people think that he specifically is so clever, vs any other rich guy

If the current lot invaded, I doubt they'd mark their presence by building a statue of Abraham Lincoln... perhaps one of John Birch.

I also don't think this decision confirms to its stated rationale. Douglas isn't being honoured because of his immutable characteristics, but because of his specific, contingent actions (he's not a black equivalent of the unknown soldier).

Nagel definitely... physically Nietzsche was a wimp, Cavill is a herculean he man type

I actually find them quite helpful. Let's people know you've read and appreciated without creating silly spam emails saying 'thanks'
February 14, 2025 at 1:16 PM
Don't suggest that... what name do you reckon the current powers that be would come up with!
February 13, 2025 at 11:45 AM
Yes. It is just daft. Cf. Brits call the sea between the islands Britain and Ireland the Irish Sea.

Probably ok with it, sales with the fascist incel market will go through the roof

Hmm. Utilitarianism never appealed to me from when I first encountered it as a teenager, but I think Famine, Affluence, and Morality is a paper everyone should read, think about, and to which they should have a response. Not many philosophers write one of those.

Agreed. These people have no principles or courage of any sort and will approve anyone* Trump tells them to; the confirmation process is pointless. *exception for Gaetz, purely because they dislike him personally, no reason of principle, as they have no principles.

I love the Culture books; I kind of wish someone would write more
