Don't miss our talk, where Vitalii Usyk and I reveal more details about the unique archaeological site of Korolevo, including some unpublished material about the record of hominin occupation there from 1.4 million years ago to 20,000 years ago! Thank you, @heasvienna.bsky.social for inviting us!

A grand place for Lucy to make her European debut.
📍 Národní muzeum
Grand interior of the National Museum in Prague, featuring a sweeping marble staircase lined with red carpets, ornate columns, and golden lamps. Busts of historical figures line the upper level beneath a decorative arched gallery, and the ceiling is made of elaborately patterned glass panels that let in natural light. Visitors walk up and down the staircases, giving a sense of scale to the opulent architecture.

Great talk @armandofalcucci.bsky.social! Impressive depth of data analysis, and I really appreciated the open science approach. Finally, robust evidence that the Ahmarian and Protoaurignacian aren’t directly linked

For #FindsFriday, here are some shell, stone and shark tooth beads and pendants from a Neolithic grave at Wadi Nafūn, Oman.
These materials indicate a symbolic connection to marine themes amongst the people buried here.

Great fun at #ESHE2025 presenting on how handaxe shape can inform discussions of African demography in the Early and Middle Pleistocene! While we have very few fossils or genetic data for this period, handaxe shape may carry a signal that can help to constrain biogeographic models - more to come!

This non #FlintFriday and #FieldworkFriday, I would like to share this mint-fresh Quartzite handaxe from SE India, likely dating back to Middle Pleistocene.

Yes, it hurts to see that broken tip! Still, one of my best find.

I am field-sick, can't wait to go back.

Very sad news today. Anthony E. Marks has passed away. He conducted pioneering prehistoric research in the Nile Valley, the southern Levant and Arabia, producing seminal works on the Palaeolithic. In 2023, aged 85, he still joined the @arduq.bsky.social excavations in Dhofar, Oman. Rest in peace.

The 'bone midden' surprised with its age, megalithic features and the number of individuals. It is as impressive as the neighbouring rock art sites, triliths and shell midden. The Nafun cultural landscape comprises 214 archaeological sites! @arduq.bsky.social

What does the Ng'ipalajem team do?

Ng’ipalajem, meaning Ancestors in Turkana, is an ERC-funded project.

Led by @martamlahr.bsky.social, the project investigates how the emergence of Homo sapiens is deeply intertwined with Africa’s long-term environmental and ecological history.

We spend long periods of time in Kenya collecting data in the collections, understanding the landscape and looking for fossils.

Picture credits: Sarah Paris The rest of the year is spent analysing data, honing skills and preparing for upcoming field work. During this time, we develop new methodologies, attend conferences, write papers and discuss our findings

Here, we propose a new perspective on early stone tool technology: emulation of naturally occurring sharp-edged stones (naturaliths) instead of inventing via 'Eureka!' moments. Nature provided the blueprint; hominins took it further.
