In a woodcut released today the Guild of Thieves and Cutpurses declared that enforcement of regulations against Thieving and Pursecutting would ‘devastate a growth industry’ and damage the economy.

a) an English degree does not prevent you from getting and doing a [scare quote] real job [scare quote]
b) there are things, goals, and values in the world other than money
but also c) last year the publishing industry's estimated worth to the UK economy was ELEVEN BILLION QUID.

Calling English a 'rip-off degree' is one of the most blatant exhibitions of personal barbarism I've ever seen. You've demonstrated nothing but the poverty of your own mind.

I was intrigued about the framing of the story. It seems to draw out the emotional elements that you have this listener's perspective. I liked it. It definitely made me want to check out more by the author.

#AScareADay - Day 7 - Today's scare is not really a scare, but a lovely sad ghost story about love and loss. I wrote a short piece on similar themes.

Quite a sad one for #AScareADay Day 7; The Last House in C____ Street by Dinah Mulock. I do love a moment of death phantom (generally speaking) but I certainly felt for the protagonist's realisation at the end.

I am currently reading the work of spiritualist Charles Tweedale who claimed to be in contact with Stradivarius, Chopin and a range of other exciting spirits. Today, I learnt about the truly bizarre story of him advocating for the exploration of caves at Malham Cove based on ghost testimony.

Day 6 of #AScareADay give us an Emily Brontë poem, ‘And now the house dog stretched once more’

I love the way this captures that creeping discomfort of knowing something in your cosy familiar setting is just...wrong.

8) The Last House of C____ Street by Dinah Mulock

This is a really sad little ghost story. Really bummed myself out with this one.

Day 7 of #AScareADay and we read The Last House in C___ Street by Dinah Mulock

I often accidentally theme the Scare A Day readings and I feel like 'sad' might be this year's repeated refrain!

A story less about ghosts than lifelong regret.

It's not a scary one but it is slightly devastating. There's an interesting narrative framing with the story coming to us through layers which, I think, work better than the simple immediacy of the central narrative in building up the sorrow.

Mulock, "Last House in C___ Street"

In this sad story, the ghost's appearance heralded the arrival of a new life & bid farewell to another's life well loved & lived.

For a brief moment the physical distance between husband & wife was bridged. But that path could only be walked by one.

I feel like basilisk charm is a repeated image related to vampires and cursed people

It's not really the title, I think. It's the first line of the poem used as an identifier.

I think he's meant to be some kind of dread stranger. I lean immortal wanderer. He definitely reminds me of some of the Gothic's top dodgy wanderers.

It's just the right side of creepy

'Some nameless thing' is such an evocative phrase

Day 6 of #AScareADay and we're on with another poem! This time it's Emily Bronte with a technically untitled poem (I think) about a mysterious stranger and his basilisk eye...

I recorded it with my new mic so better sound quality!

A weary traveller enters a warm cottage- yet one look at his eyes turns comfort to dread. There’s something not quite human in that “ghastly fair” face…& all are glad when he hides it again. #AScareADay Read Emily Brontë’s ‘And now the house dog stretched once more’
