In 'The Scientist's Guide to Writing', I offer this as an example of writing that's fairly technical (for public-facing writing) but also beautiful. Reading copyedits and just struck again by how lovely this passage is.

In news that is not news but feels like news to me: kidney stones suck and are excruciating..

And yet probably not the top 5 in terms of pain... possibly because it's still just a fairly little one.

Someone should make a Tomorrowland sequel, remind folks of what's possible when enough people with the right attitude work together to change things.

We could be so much more than we are. I cry so hard when I watch that movie 🥲

This was a post about mutual aid.

Since I recently been reminded that you can just buy trophies, I’ve bestowed the Adaptability and Resilience Award on my husband. His acceptance speech is as follows:

“Oh my god, you actually did that? This thing is huge! Why did you buy this?”

Please do not ignore me when I tell you that my health has failed to the point that this is our last chance to survive. This is the last shot we have to get a car which we need for everything here. I don't have transportation to care.

Please listen to me.
This is my sacred life I am begging for.

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have developed a heteromultivalent nanogel capable of killing some of the MOST dangerous bacteria known to medicine- with OVER 99.9% effectiveness against P. aeruginosa. It also showed STRONG antibacterial effects against other major threats, including E. coli and MRSA.

This 🧵 is absolutely insane documentation of the bibliographic catastrophe that's already started w/ AI. My sympathies to @benpatrickwill.bsky.social, his (real) co-authors, & to the students, librarians, journal editors, & readers who will be tearing their hair out. And this is just one example!
Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

Baclofen withdrawal is deadly.
Malignant hypothermia sets in within hours, dont need that after hypothermia.
Rhabdomyolysis breaks down muscles, including the heart & via that the kidneys.
She already lives with heart injury & only just survived her kidneys shutting down completely from hypothermia.
Azine's mom owns the pharmacy over $300, & she needs baclofen by Wednesday. Baclofen withdrawal is VERY bad, especially given the very high doses she has to take. She needs it by Wednesday.

$0/300

This is probably a big part of the reason I keep having crying jags.

Also Im hungry and we need help NOW. Not in a few months or when a claim is processed. We need funds for food & rideshares back & forth from the things in our home we need.

This hotel room is smol & its too icy to move big shit.
The severity of the trauma triggering happening by being displaced into a tiny space at the same time of year the house burned down is intense and disruptive.

Please help us manage to make things a bit easier. We're struggling to have enough to eat, even.

When you need supplemental oxygen and don't get it, depending on severity you'll either slowly decline as your brain starves (progressive hypoxemic brain damage) or you'll crash and die in minutes.

I've experienced the first and come very close to the second. This makes me violently angry.
Just finished going through interview transcripts for this project, and I was struck by a participant's recollection of how their oxygen tank was repossessed when they lost their job and lost their employer-sponsored insurance coverage. Lung cancer, post-op.

Inhumane.
