Though Herodotus was wrong in attributing this to Egyptians, it was still moving to stand somewhere he so clearly described and used to interpret the world.

Easton, Hawkins, Sherratt & Sherratt (2002) interestingly use the Kerebal Relief and the Kingdom of Mira to help place Troy!

"In each place there is a figure of a man cut in the rock, of four cubits and a span in height, holding in his right hand a spear and in his left a bow and arrows, and the other equipment which he has is similar to this, for it is both Egyptian and Ethiopian"

Herodotus erroneously believed this to be Sesostris, an Egyptian pharaoh whom he claimed conquered the world.

He located one of these carvings "on the road from Sardes to Smyrna."

Furthermore, we can be sure that the Karabel Relief is the same as mentioned by Herodotus because of his description.

Thanks Marc - really appreciate the response.

Ah, geburs, fantastic! I found a little on them earlier, but I'll keep digging.

Freedom ranging from owning land, to renting, to having to perform free labour for landlords (akin to an early form of serfdom).

What's the general consensus?

@marcmorris.bsky.social, what's your take?
