Sometimes everything just hits me all at once and I get a singular day long depressive episode that completely immobilizes me.

When that runs its course I bounce back pretty rapidly.

Forde in a left to right sequence in which he starts out happy and joyful in a colorful rainbow, then briefly enters a depressive episode where he has a soul-less expression, with wilting plants and mushrooms adorning him.
He is then returned back to his previous state, as though nothing happened.

I actually seldom draw any reference for my models unless I absolutely have to on a pocket book(usually to compartmentalize props or animation storyboards though)

typically artists will sculpt and that is the standard which isn't exactly doable for lowpoly, though it can help as a basis.
I'm happy to play it by ear and tweak it as I go along, even in late stages.
