6/ It is the "I am right, you are wrong" mentality that just can't make room for anything else. She loves those books so much she is going to introduce them to her young granddaughter & because she won't actually say the N word, it makes it all right in her mind. See I am not a racist!

5/ not afforded to marginalized peoples. FB ⚪ response; she declared my feelings as valid but...her take away as a child was that Tom & Huck were able to rise above the racism and see Joe as a person. Okay. She basically based on her view, she didn't see the books as problematic so they aren't. 🧵

4/ books do not consider how the language & depictions cause emotional distress to Black students. ⚪ people can safely read these kind of books because it causes no harm to them. The readers can reassure themselves by declaring they don't have those beliefs. It gives them a comfort level 🧵

3/ They consider these Twain books as sacred classics that have "valuable" lessons on slavery. They excuse away the harmful language & characterizations of Black and Brown people because Twain meant it as satire & he wanted to make a statement on racial inequality. The readers who treasure these 🧵

2/ No thought is even given to harmful stereotype of Injun Joe in Tom Sawyer. ⚪ people are so used to characterizations of Native Americans as being the evil bad guys. Reduced to caricatures for so long, it persists today. It doesn't even enter into the realm of ⚪ consciousness it is wrong. 🧵
