“What I do isn’t superficial,” Flo says. “A physio assistant told me patients who get a manicure move their hands more, because they’re proud of them. It changes their mindset and helps recovery.”

“At that time of year, it’s important to have human contact with someone who’s not a nurse or doctor,” says Flo, one of our volunteer hairdressers. “After I’ve cut their hair or shaved their beard, they feel like themselves again.”

This winter, we have focused on patients who face long stays in hospital and the loneliness that can follow. Support from our volunteers, support hub and complementary therapists has helped many people feel less isolated and more able to cope.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Graham Stack has raised £25,500 for the Helping Hands fund in aid of the Royal Free Charity to support children’s cancer care at Barnet Hospital. On a visit to the ward he met Mya, an 11-year-old football fan who has just finished treatment for a rare brain tumour.

The London Doctors' Orchestra and Choir will fill the Royal Free Hospital atrium with festive cheer on Sunday 14 December.

Patients and staff are invited to join us between 4pm and 5:30pm for an afternoon of enchanting festive melodies and holiday favourites.
