It is encouraging to see the Welsh Government acknowledging Swift bricks as a good example of enhancement measures to achieving a net benefit for biodiversity.

However, we do not see how this initiative could “cloud the picture in terms of wider appropriate net benefits”, as is claimed – nor do we view Swift bricks as being the only effective way to counter the devastating declines we’ve seen in Swift numbers in Wales.

What the Swift needs now from the Welsh Government is urgent action – and by giving nature a home, cost-effective Swift bricks can play their part in helping to prevent this fascinating bird from disappearing as a breeding bird in Wales.

Swift populations in Wales have plummeted 76% in Wales since 1995. The petition calling for Swift bricks to be installed in all new buildings in Wales looks set for debate on 1 October.

More details to come on how you can help us ensure that more Swifts can return home to Wales in future summers.

This is an area that is home to sensational wildlife – from Little Terns at the coast to Black Grouse and Hen Harriers on the moors. If the Glyndwr National Park goes ahead it must have a strong focus on driving nature recovery and tackling climate change.

6/ Within weeks, bird flu was confirmed in captive gamebirds nearby too. Both incidents were adjacent to moors that are home to the main breeding population of Black Grouse in Wales, endangering them and other Red-listed birds like Curlews and Hen Harriers.

5/ Gamebirds kept at high densities then released into the countryside pose a big bird-flu risk. Earlier this summer, 875 dead Pheasants tested positive in a mass mortality event in North Berwyn.

4/ Since 2022, bird-flu has impacted birds globally. Here in Wales, seabirds were impacted the most but Red-listed birds of conservation concern, such as Curlews, Hen Harriers, Buzzards, Peregrines and Tawny Owls have also tested positive. As have released Pheasants.
