Hawaiian Rail, last seen in 1884. This bird had two types, one with dark and one with light feathers (this drawing shows the light form).

Today is the final day of #avianaugust - I will be doing a wrap up post tomorrow, as well as some info about buying prints for anyone interested!

After days of extinct birds, it's a nice change to draw a species still with us (though critically endangered), so this one is saying: I'm still kicking!

ʻUla-ʻai-hāwane - extinct since 1892.

There are only 5 surviving museum specimens of this bird, and a few 19th-early 20th century renderings of it, most of which were made after the bird was already gone.
