A little-known legal tool is becoming a central pillar of the Trump administration’s deportations agenda: Expedited removals

Here’s what to know

www.migrationpolicy.org/article/trum...
The Trump administration has vigorously justified the expanded use of fast-track removal authority as a much-needed policy to reverse what it terms the migrant “invasion” that occurred under President Joe Biden. Immigration lawyers and others warn the procedure, which comes with limited due-process protections and inhibits immigrants’ quick access to legal counsel, exacerbates the odds that asylum seekers’ fears of persecution will be overlooked—and will also inevitably scoop up some U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, with important costs to civil liberties and constitutional rights.

8 months on and there's still a declared immigrant "invasion" at the US-Mexico border

Oral argument for immigrant advocates' challenge to Trump's presidential border proclamation is now scheduled at the DC Appellate Court for 11/3

DHS has just claimed that 1.6 million unauthorized immigrant "self deported" this year. This number seems to come from a Center for Immigration Studies estimate that relies on the Current Population Survey. As @jedkolko.bsky.social writes, such a large decline doesn't line up with other data
That reported multi-million decline in US immigrants just doesn’t add up
The recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data showing that there were 2.2 million fewer immigrants in the US in July 2025 than in January is almost certainly wrong.

The Dept. of Homeland Security has a new statement out about deportations. They're saying they have deported ~400,000 people since Trump took office

That puts them on pace to deport ~600,000 people in one year they say

I suspect that includes people removed by both ICE and...

New research reveals the profound impact on mixed-status families—where at least one family member lacks legal immigration status. 🧵

Marrying a U.S. citizen does NOT automatically grant a green card. These families face deportation threats that fundamentally reshape how they live, parent, and cope.

About 60% of BP encounters were at the sectors of RGV, El Paso, and Tucson. Single adult encounters were higher in El Paso; unaccompanied children higher in RGV; and family units higher in Tucson.

Follow me and @migrationpolicy.bsky.social to keep up with these and other migration trends!
ruizags.bsky.social
Because the vast majority of encounters are of Mexicans + Central Americans, who have broad repatriation agreements with US, about 96% of the 6K BP encounters were processed for removal, voluntary return or ICE detention.

Since May 2025, BP has not processed any migrants for release with NTAs.
ruizags.bsky.social
Mexican single adults account for the small increase in encounters btwn Jul and Aug. No other nationality had more than 500 encounters.

Hondurans were the most likely to travel as family units and, notably, Salvadorans as unaccompanied children.
ruizags.bsky.social
⬇️August CBP Data Takeaways⬇️

Still at low levels, but migrant encounters at/btwn POEs increased from 8K in Jul to 10K in Aug. Btwn POEs there were 6K encounters, mostly of Mexican migrants.

That's 204 daily BP encounters, higher than the 148 in Jul, but significantly lower than under Biden.

TPS terminations will affect Southern states the most. Nearly 1/3 of these TPS holders (404,000) live in Florida. Texas has the second-largest TPS population, home to 11% of TPS holders (147,000), followed by Georgia, with 4% (50,000).

For fellow immigration data nerds: The Congressional Research Service has updated it's invaluable report on Temporary Protected Status. Shows that 1.3 million(!) people had TPS as of the end of March 2025. Including 605,000 Venezuelans, 331,000 Haitians, 170,000 Salvadorans, and 101,000 Ukrainians.
