Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?

Any instrument, really. God I wish I had started in my 30s.

i’ve wondered whether the traditional tactic of peaceful resistance to shock the conscience of observers who see nonviolence met with force is still possible in a media environment where only novelty can get the attention of the people you need to be shocked, and portland seems to have an answer

Streets are still closed off in front of the Portland ICE facility at 8:30pm. Protesters have gathered on a side street. Dance party in progress.

Especially with this particular administration and the oh so desperate to appear macho ICE goons. They want confrontation that sells the public on the idea that the city is under siege but all the confrontations just look like they would get their asses kicked by a kindergarten class.

Does the lack of broader consequences for the folks involved in I/C lead to what we see today though?

When I worked in law enforcement it was said (by civilians) that cops didn't catch criminals because the cops were smart, but because criminals get more brazen the more they get away with it.

Kind of feels like a lot of the disconnect between the D base and the D pols is that the pols remain convinced the GOP is mostly Jeff Sessions and the base is no longer really sure a Jeff Sessions ever actually existed.
rumdood.com
I think this is the key takeaway from the Trump Era and the key thing that a lot of pols seem unable to process.

Not that people like Jeff Sessions exists - but that the GOP is not actually made up of people like Jeff Sessions.

Hey, maybe someone can explain this using very small words and numbers for @governor.ca.gov to understand

One small tweak I'd make is you agreeing to retire and doing your debasement to tech billionaires in the privacy of your own home.

My neighbors and I were all talking yesterday about how nice it was in Orange when they closed part of the old town plaza to traffic and put tables in the streets, basically turning the plaza into an outdoor food hall where you could grab beer from one place and tacos and noodles from others.
rumdood.com
Trying really hard to think of anything an outsider could say about Orange - or Orange County for that matter - that I'd say, "HEY! That's for ME to make fun of!" and I'm coming up blank.

My ex-wife's family believed in this. I thought it was... telling... that when something bad was happening to them, they'd chalk it up to spiritual warfare with the devil, but if it was happening to "liberals" then that was God's judgement.

Some day I will look back on the fact that my cousin who moved from Portland to Tokyo 20 years ago and now lives in Seoul has a better idea of what is happening in Portland on a daily basis than the President of the United States who believes it's in open revolt.

Not today though.

Like, we trade away "has the charisma to pull it off, but is an idiot" for "has negative charisma but is not an idiot and will actually follow Peter Thiel's instructions" and mix it with the hopefully brief "rally for our fallen king" effect
rumdood.com
This is my main concern for the idea of "just hoping he does because then it all stops" because - does it? Nobody else has ever pull but also the evil shitheads he brought with him still hold the levers of power. Also John Roberts will still be a thing.

What DHS pulled in Chicago on Tuesday is wildly unconstitutional. They smashed down almost every door in the building, dragged entire families into the street, and detained people for hours ("Kavanaugh stops").

Ms. Fisher was held for five hours and another senior citizen was held for three hours.
Rodrick Johnson, 67, is one of many residents who were detained by federal agents during the South Shore raid. A U.S. citizen, he said agents broke through his door and dragged him out in zip ties.

Johnson said he was left tied up outside the building for nearly three hours before agents finally let him go.

“I asked [agents] why they were holding me if I was an American citizen, and they said I had to wait until they looked me up,” Jones said. “I asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer. They never brought one.”
