Recent examples of successful popular overthrows of dictators: Madagascar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh. In all cases the adminstration was removed with force.
Also, the classic tyrants like Gaddaffi and Ceausescu didn't remove themselves exactly "peacefully" no matter how much people protested.
