Obama both promised widgets (economic recovery and healthcare) and gave people something to believe in (constantly talking about higher ideals)
It can be done!
ryangeddie.bsky.social
True and why must we choose between widgets and something to believe in.
I want widgets and something to believe in.

The most effective Democratic messenger of my lifetime is the guy who broke every single rule Democrats are currently trying to follow: Barack Hussein Obama, the guy with the weird name who talked like a professor, made sweeping appeals to higher principles, and never once appeared salt-of-the-earth

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

This feels like a bad business decision, but I guess if you’re owned by a 100 billionaire losing a couple milly on a boring old newspaper is like losing change in the couch

So is the plan here to get conservatives to start reading the Washington post?

Last week, new WaPo opinion editor Adam O'Neal quietly carried out another purge of staffers, cutting editors and major names like Marc Fisher and David Hoffman, among others.

Meanwhile, he welcomed three conservatives to the section.

Adam O’Neal says he’s bringing “intellectual diversity” to The Washington Post’s opinion pages—but the moves he’s making behind the scenes tell a different story.

No idea if this is representative of the French speaking population from Switzerland generally, but they seemed to really appreciate the effort and would even respond back to me in French

The most delighted I’ve ever seen someone at me attempting to speak the local language was a French speaking Swiss person in Geneva.

I’ve seen Swiss Francophone’s cast side-eyes at spoken Quebec French, which is many levels of funny.

As long as you’re owning the libs more than you are generating negative media attention for the GOP, they’ll let you get away with it.
This guy got one too many bad headlines

The first rule of the culture war is you must always be irritating your enemies more than your allies.
Paxton very nearly flew too close to the sun on that and it looks like this guy’s wings just melted.

you know this guy had to have made a huge number of enemies for oklahoma republicans to want to take him down (serves him right, he sucks)

THE CHICKENS ARE FINALLY COMING HOME TO ROOST

Ryan Walters is out & the investigation floodgates just opened. The Oklahoma AG launched a full audit of Walters’ entire tenure as Superintendent, and it’s about damn time.

Also the education dept website’s being scrubbed of his culture-war nonsense.

More legitimate contenders also bear some responsibility for not stepping up too! People compare 2024 to 1968 sometimes, but in 1968 there were real challenges from high profile candidates to LBJ.
ryangeddie.bsky.social
Biden for sure bears some responsibility for running too.
I think it’s up for debate how much any candidate could’ve overcome whatever headwinds would’ve been against any dem candidate in 2024, but of the things democrats *could actually control* this seems like the biggest one to me.
ryangeddie.bsky.social
The worst strategic mistake that the Democratic Party made in the 2024 cycle was running Biden again in the first place but we don’t talk about that anymore because it doesn’t allow us to keep relitigating the 2016 primary.

There has been basically no (public) reckoning with the democratic strategists who said that "raising the salience" of immigration/deportations in ~March would help Trump, which was obviously wrong at the time and has been proved wrong over the last 6 months www.gelliottmorris.com/p/kilmar-abr...

It’s interesting going through the list of quotes on these and seeing two distinct sets of power users emerge. I’m familiar with a ton of people from the lib-sphere and I have no idea what to call the other one because I know none of the people.

also, in keeping with Vance’s view of american identity, only white people are fully American with the right to critique or dissent. nonwhites must show proper gratitude (supporting Trump or marrying JD Vance) before they can speak critically of the country (in approved ways, of course)

Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
Tweet from the VP:
Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country. It's been
overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most.
Yet she oozes with contempt.
My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you'd be a much
happier person if you showed a little gratitude
