Tim Burners-Lee on #AI:

"We must ensure policymakers do not end up playing the same decade-long game of catchup they have done over social media. The time to decide the governance model for AI was yesterday, so we must act with urgency."

Why I gave the world wide web away for free | Tim Berners-Lee
My vision was based on sharing, not exploitation – and here’s why it’s still worth fighting for

"What if I told you I could stop you worrying about climate change, and all you had to do was read one book? Great, you’d say, until I mentioned that the reason you’d stop worrying was because the book says our species only has a few years before it’s wiped out by superintelligent AI anyway."

I've said for some time that the AI crisis may outpace the climate emergency.

AI developments are so rapid that few understand the immense implications.

The risk of superintelligence wiping out humanity is just one of a multitude of growing risks around AI.

If Anyone Builds it, Everyone Dies review – how AI could kill us all
If machines become superintelligent we’re toast, say Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares. Should we believe them?

Top AI experts say AI poses an extinction risk on par with nuclear war.

Prohibiting the development of superintelligence can prevent this risk.

We’ve just launched a new campaign to get this done.

Could we please stop pretending that the flags being hung from streetlamps or painted on roundabouts are innocent expressions of patriotic pride? This is the far right marking out its territory. It uses these flags to intimidate its traditional victims and opponents. 🧵1/3

📚 "A compelling case that superhuman AI would almost certainly lead to global human annihilation."

Those are the words of Jon Wolfsthal, former Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, reviewing "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies".

Lincoln showed what good leadership looks like. We don’t have to settle for this crop of ineffective leaders; we deserve better, we need better, we can have better - Lincoln is proof of that. Our desperate times call for such leaders to urgently arise.

Lincoln was one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen. He had wisdom, empathy, compassion, strength, morality, and (to borrow Doris Kearns Goodwin’s term) political genius, in spades.

I’m delighted to be featured in the newsletter of the Abraham Lincoln Association (ALA).

Last month, I published a review of The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, a set of 11 books spanning
~5,200 pages. I shared it with the ALA, and they kindly included an abridged version in their newsletter.

"According to the 35th annual State of the Climate report, greenhouse gas concentrations, the global temperature across land and oceans, global sea level, and ocean heat content all reached record highs in 2024, and glaciers lost the most ice of any year on record."

During this time of permcrisis, I find it hard not to despair.

So, in search of hope and inspiration, I took some time to read about one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen - Abraham Lincoln.

This blog contains numerous quotes that stood out for me.
