Hi folks 😊 my bio does most of the intro for me, but in addition I guess I’ll say I’m a specialist in histories of race, sentimentalism, science & tech studies, and a bit of enlightenment philosophy. I’m also a gym rat, a lover of drag, and perpetually snarky.
For the record, this year’s Society of Dix-neuviémistes conference theme of “health and happiness” is so clearly up my alley that it is all the more devastating to be outside of academia right now.

Is it me or is this year’s French studies job market the worst in a while? MLA job list only shows 20 positions with the word “French” included in the ad, and at least one of those 20 is actually for German literary studies.

Given the hiring freezes and economic uncertainty, I wonder if universities/departments will be more understanding next year of applicants whose CVs reflect a gap in academic work. General wisdom says a year without an academic job will reflect poorly if not shut the door completely.

A beacon of hope and joy in an otherwise thankless profession. I will love and miss you forever Bénédicte.

everyone living in the u.s. needs to know this
I don't know who needs to know this, but Pro Publica has an online thing that will format a letter to your US health insurance company to demand the records behind a claim denial. (which the insurance is then legally required to provide in most cases)

Find Out Why Health Insurance Denied Your Claim
You likely have the right to access records that explain why your insurer denied your claim or prior authorization request. Use ProPublica’s free tool to generate a letter requesting your claim file f...

I am once again asking centrist Dems to TAKE THE NOTE and support policies that are actually popular like universal healthcare

NCFS folks! I’m thinking about organizing a panel on comedy/humor for next year’s conference. Especially satire, caricature/early BD, vaudeville, etc. Who should I reach out to?

Can someone smarter than me help me understand the word "libidinal" beyond "related to the libido"? Rereading Saidiya Harman's "Venus in Two Acts"; page 5: "The libidinal investment in violence is everywhere apparent in the documents..."
This doesn't seem related to libido-as-sex-drive. Help?
