What an epic return! 🤩🌍🐦

A common snipe tagged in April 2025 near Olomouc is back in Czechia after migrating to the Yamalo-Nenets AO (east of the Urals) – a round trip of over 7,500 km!

A vagrant juvenile Sanderling turned up in Israel—likely after a single non-stop flight from the Dutch Wadden Sea. Here’s thread explaining why that’s remarkable and interesting. @wadertales.bsky.social @globalflyway.bsky.social #Birds #Migration

Are animals randomly distributed in the air, or is there a structure to where and when we find them? In our new paper we outline factors that shape habitat use in the air, from abiotic structure to biotic interactions. A lot of fun discussions behind this one! 🦅🦋🦇🌬

Animal niches in the airspace
For flying animals, including many birds, bats, and insects, the air is a crucial arena for a range of behaviors. Technological advances, such as year-round tracking of flight altitudes and expanded u...

🔑 Even philopatric species can maintain genetic diversity during rapid range shifts thanks to high dispersal. Yet, subtle genetic erosion via private allele loss still tracks the expansion route. This is key for predicting adaptive potential under climate-driven range shifts. 5/6
rytikerttunen.bsky.social
However, private allelic richness declined slightly with latitude, showing that even with high dispersal, some genetic footprint remains.
Combining all evidence revealed the expansion origin in the SW of the range. 4/6
rytikerttunen.bsky.social
There was no drop in nucleotide diversity or allelic richness across the expansion front and almost no founder effect signals. This suggests that high dispersal capacity buffered against the usual genetic costs. 3/6
rytikerttunen.bsky.social
Here, we combined historical observations on first occurrences, ring recovery data and genomic analyses spanning the European breeding range to map the expansion and to test its genetic consequences. 2/6
rytikerttunen.bsky.social
Our new study in Molecular Ecology doi.org/10.1111/mec.... explores the northward expansion of the Eurasian #reedwarbler. Despite a fast range shift, genetic diversity wasn't lost and only weak founder effect signs were found. Let’s break it down: 🧵👇 1/6

How robust is current hunting bag data, and can we rely on it to manage sustainable harvest of UK waterbirds?

For most species, it's pretty good, but released mallard🦆🦆can confuse the picture

Recent collaboration with @ecoevoenviro.bsky.social and Matt Ellis

New report reviews whether current data collection on hunting bags can reliably determine whether shooting of legally-huntable waterbird species is sustainable in the UK bit.ly/45gaCkT

This evidence will support the UK's obligation towards African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA)

The data roughly correspond to what we know from ring recoveries (see the map here: migrationatlas.org/node/1648 and the description in the tab 'Text'). In general, they follow a parallel longitudinal migration pattern. What's new is the level of detail thanks to the fine-scale tracking data! 😎

Historically, drainage has massively reduced breeding numbers. Species is amber-listed.
