Bit of a semantics question here: what about using it as a verb?
Like saying that someone is "bitching about something" or something like that. That tends to be almost entirely gender-neutral.

Fun fact: the Wikipedia article for it has a complete listing of its fate each year. I've made it a bit of a tradition to check it as the years have gone on.
