A few excerpts to pique your interest
“WHY IS THIS BOOK DIFFERENT? well, because I'm an artist first. Not your dad's accountant. And I've seen some shit as a woman, as a mother, as a creative, and, is frankly, as a person without much money or power. Here are some exam-ples: I was fired from a museum job for complaining that my pay was half that of my male colleagues, I've experienced pregnancy discrimination, and I had a gallerist cancel a once-in-a-lifetime studio visit when I asked for an extra 15 minutes because I was actively having a miscarriage. I've been assumed to be financially incompetent because I'm an artist. The creative stereotype is harmful and untrue (you know it, right? The one that says you're a flaky creative and "bad with money?"). True, I care more about inspiring people than amassing money. But also, I'm not stupid. I know how fully capable you are, and if I can do it, you can too. Your exact experiences are likely different, and yet you too may feel alienated in accounting spaces because your experience is so different from the accountant's. Maybe your perspective has been shaped by financial discrimination, being a different personality type, or having very dif. ferent interests from people in accounting. Perhaps you have worked hard to become the expert you are, only to feel humiliated admitting you don't know much about taxes in front of a judgmental accountant. Many of us feel like a round peg in a square hole when we talk to financial professionals.” How do you get your money organized, your tax-savvy kicking, and your systems set up to put taxes and savings on autopilot, especially when you don't feel anywhere close to that point? I have one mantra for you: Aim for improvement, not perfection. Seeking perfection will keep you stuck and give you excuses to delay, ("Wait, I'm not done yet. Just one more detail....") It's an impossible standard that will ensure you never make it. Improvement, on the other hand, is 100% achievable. You, me, and the IRS already know that you're not perfect. Tax law doesn't require you to be. Wanna know what the IRS really does care about, though? Being on time. That is not an impossible standard. Also? The IRS is very consistent about penalties when you are late. You might be skimming this book to get your taxes done. I get it-I promise to help you do that. But let's talk for a minute about why you might feel allergic to growing your own wealth and why that might be holding you back. Her's the more amazing part. If I happen to have had taxes witheld from my salary (if it was W2, that would be required), then I have been prepaying taxes all year based on $60,000 of income. So when I actually do my taxes, I will have overpaid tax on that $10,000. In other words, I get a refund. A big one. Right in the most critical moment of my business, when cash is low and I'm most vulnerable. This is my favorite part of the tax code. It's poetic. The US government is nurturing your baby business through its infancy, with a big fat direct deposit into your bank account when you need it the most. Art school never taught me any of this. And I'm a little salty about it. This percentage of your home costs-which would normally not be deductible, because they're personal-now becomes deductible as a dedicated work space expense. She'll calculate 25% of her total home costs (rent, utilities, renter's insurance) as her home office expense, 1o If you live with roommates, their rooms don't count as part of your available personal space, so don't include that in your total square footage. If you work in an outbuilding like a garage or shed, you need to include the square footage of the shed in the total square footage of your home, In addition, you may fully deduct direct expenses. To document your home office, take photos of the full space and keep them in your tax files. " Use this to illustrate what you use it for and to prove that it is a 100% business purpose. Audits happen retroactively, so if you don't document your space while you live there, and then you move, you'll lose your proof. You've probably got a phone with a camera on it with you right now. Go ahead and snap those pics now. Seriously, I'll wait. Examples include your car, your cell phone, or your computer. Chef's kiss - what a great snapshot example of the ignorant conspiracy-susceptible mindset leading US gov. right now. They don't understand how things work so they assume everyone's out to get them but it turns out it's their own people and their own mistakes that are the problem.

“Tilting” in Olde English is the act of attacking something with a lance while on horseback, also known as jousting. It came from the technique used in jousting where knight would start carrying the lance pointing up, then the knight would lower, or tilt, the lance downward toward their opponent in an attempt to knock them off their horse (or kill them if we’re talking about actual war). The expression basically means “fighting a pointless, unwinnable, and, frankly, just plain asinine battle“, much like Don Quixote himself attempted to kill a windmill he thought was a dragon. It came to English after the Spanish novel “Don Quixote” was translated from Spanish and re-published in English, and became hugely popular among English speakers for a time.

“Since January, the NWS—a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)—has reduced its workforce by nearly 600 people as a direct result of staffing cuts ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, as part of Trump's mission to eviscerate numerous federal agencies. This policy is in line with Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation-led blueprint for a far-right overhaul of the federal government that calls for "dismantling" NOAA. Trump has also called for the elimination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, arguing that states should shoulder most of the burden of extreme weather preparation and response. Shutting down FEMA would require an act of Congress.”
