Pete Conrad war ein ziemlich origineller Typ. Sein erstes Wort auf dem Mond - weniger pathetisch als zuvor der Ausspruch von Neil Armstrong - lautete „Whoopee!“ Er hatte vor dem Start gewettet, dass er ohne Vorgaben der NASA frei entscheiden könne, was er bei Betreten der Mondoberfläche sagen dürfe.
Aus dem Inneren der Mondlandefähre fotografiert zeigt das Bild bei geöffneter Luke Pete Conrad oben auf der Leiter, die nach unten auf die Mondoberfläche führt. Er trägt Helm, Handschuhe und Raumanzug und ist dabei, auf die Mondoberfläche zu klettern, die man hell und stark überbelichtet im Hintergrund sieht. Da es sich offenbar um das erste Foto eines neu eingelegten Films handelte, ist wohl beim Einlegen etwas Licht auf den Frame gekommen, was sich an einem leicht orangefarbenen Streifen zeigt, der etwa auf Brusthöhe über Conrads Raumanzug verläuft - ein unfreiwilliger Lichteffekt, den sicher viele - sorry! - ältere Leute kennen, die damals mit analogen Kameras fotografiert haben.

Am unteren Bildrand die schwarzen Baumsilhouetten sowie in der Bildmitte der Blick ins Tal, der Himmel darüber ist knallig pink, man sieht stellenweise die strahlenförmigen Wellen der Nordlichter, die im Himmel pulsieren. Knapp oberhalb der Bergkuppen schimmern die dort dichteren Wolkenschleier in grünlich-blassgelben Farben. Von rechts zieht ein Flugzeug eine Leuchtspur quer durch das Bild. Gleiche Perspektive mit gleichem Motiv (Baumsilhouetten und Talblick), hier ist der Himmel vielfältig farbiger von pink über grünlich-gelb, lila und blau, zwischen den Wolkenschleiern funkeln die Sterne hindurch. Hier zeigt sich das Polarlicht über den Bäumsilhouetten und dem Taleinschnitt in kräftig pinken Farben mit einem leichten Hauch hellgelb sowie lila an den oberen und äußeren Bildrändern.
