Following a Pagan spiritual path isn’t easy. As a minority spiritual practice, we may experience backlash from family, friends and our extended communities. Some other religions even label us as an enemy, something to fear and avoid. Pagans can also be used as a scapegoat for all kinds of social and moral problems. While we hope for a more welcoming future, how do we manage the difficult now? First, cherish your trusted Pagan friends and non-Pagan allies; hold them close. Share your concerns and tell them how they can help. Next, focus more deeply on your own spiritual practice so that you’re equipped for any challenge. Finally, keep your heart open, even when it’s difficult. My experience shows me that for every adversary there are two new friends to be made. - Wes Isley, chaplain@sacredwell.org

If you haven’t yet had a Pagan leader or teacher disappoint you, don’t worry, it’ll happen. The reality is that people are fallible, Pagan or otherwise. When we put people on pedestals, they ultimately fall. Yes, those of us in leadership should always strive to do better, but it isn’t easy. And those of us looking up for inspiration and guidance need to balance our admiration with a good look in a mirror. When have I disappointed someone? Am I living up to my own values and ethics? What do others see that I do not? When others disappoint us, it’s tempting to throw in the towel. But a wiser reaction is to turn a mirror on ourselves and take a hard look to ensure that we avoid the same traps. chaplain@sacredwell.org –Rev. Wes Isley

The trigger that led me to Paganism was a profound spiritual experience I had while on a business trip—not something I could share with my suited-up colleagues. Before I was able to make sense of it, I worried I was having a mental breakdown. My Christian background had not prepared me for this. Pagans may embrace mystical experiences more easily, but they can still take us by surprise and can be hard to understand. If this has happened to you, how did you handle it? For me, talking with someone I could trust was an important first step toward embracing Paganism and thriving. Part of what makes change so difficult - even good changes - is the loss of the familiar and the grief it brings. Has your spiritual practice changed over time and, if so, was that an easy change? Hopefully, it was a good change in the long run, but you likely experienced some grief over the loss of familiar rituals or leaving behind a familiar spiritual community. And there's the feeling of facing the unknown. Will you regret this choice? Will the new path be fulfilling? Our fear of the unknown or of losing something familiar can keep us stuck, however, and we risk missing out on something special. Is the familiar holding you back from making a good change? -Rev.
