Another recommendation from me (I enjoyed the audiobook more than the book as I flicked between the 2)

I’m not sure why / how I saw it but there was spookily a good review in the guardian last week that made me want to check out her other books www.theguardian.com/books/2025/n...
The Wax Child by Olga Ravn review – a visceral tale of witchcraft
The author of The Employees goes back to 17th-century Denmark for an intensely poetic portrait of everyday sorcery and female solidarity

I enjoyed Venetian Vespers but agree with you on hating all the characters

It’s a strange world out there - but the write up had me at “signature blend of humor, history, and hard-nosed journalism”

What a beautiful book

I did spend the first half thinking it was ajother “lies of Locke Lamora” I seems to recall, but that’s no bad thing…and I pre-ordered the next one so must have ended happy

Have to say I have loved each of his books I have picked up - I thought “the wanderers” was Stephen King / The Stand worthy. Haven’t tried this one yet but sure it will be good - he’s some writer

Not history I’m familiar with but the write up is intriguing so I’ve put this on the TBR pile - thanks

I think this was one of the funniest I read - and I always had a soft spot for death in his books

I really enjoyed this, such a clear and defined magic system and lots of politics / gang warfare. Plus the Broken Binding versions were beautiful books

Got through some short reads last week. “William” by Mason Coile & “The Wax Child” by Olga Ravn. Good reads, William was pulp horror and The Wax Child was beautifully written (very melancholy). I’m just about to start “The Blackfire Blade” by James Logan - yet again I only vaguely remember book 1

I didn’t hold it against the narrator as it’s the same in the book, but yes hadn’t connected he is British so would have been unnatural / annoying for him I imagine

Should have been “have to say” not “have to save” but sounds like you got the gist. I’m definitely going to listen to the next one
November 17, 2025 at 2:52 PM
I did the same - someone else had just started and it was one of those books on my TBR pile I never got round to. I move between the audiobook and kindle and have to save the narration on the audiobook was excellent - really brought it to life for me. Hope you enjoy

Took me a while and almost lost it but enjoyed the recommendation from here “Tainted Cup” last week (enough to buy the sequel). I’ve moved over to “William” by Mason Coile. This months book subscription from Mr B’s - so far so good at building an unsettling premise
November 17, 2025 at 7:10 AM
I think it came in my book subscription and to be fair they don’t usually pick bad books for me…ok decision made - I’ll go for that next

For some reason that never gets off my TBR pile - enjoy and looking forward to hearing about (I must have bought it for a reason)

About 1 hour off finishing “A voice in the night” by Simon Mason. Book 4 (I think) of an enjoyable crime / police procedural with good characters. Lacking motivation about what to start next so will see what others have
