Text from page 511 of Project 2025: It is essential that legislation provides states and localities maximal flexibility to pursue locally designed policies and minimize the likelihood of federal preemption of local land use and zoning decisions. In the same manner, Congress should prioritize any and all legislative support for the single-family home. … American homeowners and citizens know best what is in the interest of their neighborhoods and communities. Localities rather than the federal government must have the final say in zoning laws and regulations, and a conservative Administration should oppose any efforts to weaken single-family zoning.

Regular reminder to non-fascist legislators and city council members: not changing single-family zoning is a page right out of the MAGA playbook. Specifically, page 511:

The purchase of a home is the largest investment most Americans will make in their lifetimes, and homeownership remains the most accessible way to build generational wealth for millions of Americans. For these reasons, American homeowners and citizens know best what is in the interest of their neighborhoods and communities. Localities rather than the federal government must have the final say in zoning laws and regulations, and a conservative Administration should oppose any efforts to weaken single-family zoning.

Compare this with the Fair Housing Act Design Manual, which does not make this distinction:
DWELLINGS CovERED BY THE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS The design requirements apply to buildings built for first occupancy after March 13, 1991, which fall under the definition of "covered multifamily dwellings." See page 12 for a discussion of "first occupancy." Covered multifamily dwellings are: I. all dwelling units in buildings containing four or more dwelling units if such buildings have one or more elevators, and 2. all ground floor dwelling units in other buildings containing four or more units.

Newly-constructed covered multifamily dwellings as defined in this chapter, include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Apartment buildings with 3 or more dwelling units including timeshare apartments not considered a place of public accommodation or transient lodging as defined in Health and Safety Code Section 19955 (a), and Chapter 2 of the California Building Code. 2. Condominiums with 4 or more dwelling units including timeshare condominiums not considered a place of public accommodation or transient lodging as defined in Health and Safety Code Section 19955 (a), and Chapter 2 of the California Building Code. 3. Lodging houses, as defined in Chapter 2 of the California Building Code, used as a residence with more than 3 but not more than 5 guest rooms. 4. Congregate residences, as defined in Chapter 2 of the California Building Code, with 3 or more sleeping units.

When I was on the HUD website a while ago, it was during the shutdown, and in addition to the 404s, there was a banner on the homepage blaming the shutdown on “the Radical Left in Congress.”
