This is why strategies that focus exclusively on material conditions (or protecting democratic institutions) often fail to break through. People have to be convinced that they do not deserve oppression and neither does anyone else.

Racist propaganda conditions you to see any policy promoting economic mobility or social equality as a grave injustice bc the government shouldn't make equal what (nature/god/etc) has made unequal. This is the authoritarian heartbeat that vivifies popular fascist movements
