I feel like most years, my album of the year is a toss-up between a blackened metal band that sounds like a fucking jet engine, and a quirky Icelandic pop band that sounds like several cartoon characters on psilocybin. Apparently I have *two* types, and they're both medium-unwell.

Someone I know is going to be taking a Greek island cruise, including a stop on Crete. I joked that they should watch out for German paratroopers, and got crickets. Not sure "very regionally-specific WW2 trivia disguised as a joke" is as universal a laugh language as I'd like it to be.

Oh for fuck's sake. It's not only possible to think that Nicolás Maduro is a bad dude AND it's illegal and immoral for America to throw missiles at speedboats, it's basically the only reasonable opinion. This is geopolitics, kids. Most of the time, both sides suck.

Also: 'Mother Night'. The book's fantastic (<3 my boy Kurt V.), but the movie w/ Nick Nolte isn't half bad. My point is that there are ways to explore how you might feel if you do nothing while everything burns, and to think about your relationship with moral evil.

(Also: I have no solution for this feeling. I cycle through phases each day. Heavy engagement and semi-constructive outrage, then distract myself with work, then distract myself with entertainment, rinse/repeat. So it's not like I'm actually helping.)

I only ever heard second-hand from my German relatives what the 1930s were like but it sounded like this. You see the story, it feels wrong, but everyone else around you is just carrying on, shopping, working, going to the cinema. So you do the same. Keep your head down, maybe this is fine? Normal?

I reflexively shout to the empty air "NOT A REAL THING" every time I hear the term used. It's the horrifying, logical extension of our watering down of the word "terrorist" to mean anyone we might want to murder without a trial.

The term "non-international armed conflict" has a specific legal definition YOU DUMB FUCKS. Trying to apply it to throwing missiles at boats that *might* have dope in them is a FUCKIN' STRETCH. Some of us out here follow international law for fun because we're FUN GUYS.

Our next constitutional amendment (if we get to keep having a constitution, that is) should require that any elected official that "jokes" about violating the 22nd Amendment is summarily executed.
