So incredible! Her passion for conservation work and saving the planet was even more inspirational in person. Rare to get to meet your role models like that!

Such sad news! So lucky to have been able to meet her back in the before times. We’ve lost a legend who paved the way for so many and did such incredible work.

It’s fascinating how often those who appeal to history are woefully ignorant of history! “Saxon forefathers” is a classic 19th century racial dogwhistle.

Moreover, the “ancient liberties” thing is utter tosh.

So much weird in here, but hard to disagree that the average Saxon would have recognised policies of sinking vessels you don't like the look of, and imprisoning people who look different.

Also some great late-Roman and early medieval archaeology too 😊

SHARP is pleased to announce that our publication 'The Anglo-Saxon Agricultural Revolution in Norfolk' based on the 25th Anniversary conference held in 2020 is off to the printers!

We are aiming for a book launch on the first Tuesday lecture, and it will be available to purchase during the season.
Dust jacket of 'The Anglo-Saxon Agricultural Revolution in Norfolk', edited by Richard Hogget and Neil Faulkner. The front page shows a drone shot of our early medieval complex trench, with the modern village of Sedgeford in the background. The back page contains a photo of a complete pot, with the blurb discussing the contributions made in the book towards the topic.

It's out! On Thursday, there was a book launch for this transformative study of how the Domesday Book was made. Astonishing that it has been possible to learn so much about something so apparently well-understood. @oxmedstud.bsky.social

It's an honest name. The area around Ely has historically been a great eel habitat, and local fishermen caught them in huge numbers.

At the end of the 11th C. the Abbot of Ely collected 108,933 eels per year in rent payments from local tenants. 2/3
Meme. Photograph of Ely Cathedral, standing under a hovering sky. The town spreads out before the cathedral, with red roofs and pretty brick. There are trees and what seems like the top of a railroad bridge. It's rather picturesque. The cathedral, of course, towers over the town. Literally, as it has several towers. It is tall and stately and delicate in it's way. The roof is grey, and the stone is tan. It is a wonderful cathedral, and would make a terrible starship.

Above the scene, the clouds are piling up into tall pillars of white and grey. It looks peaceful and serene, but here is malice in those clouds if you chose to see it. They are gathering strength, and their undersides are dark like the thoughts of plotting horse. Only the cathedral stands between the down and destruction.

Meme text reads:
"The Ship of the Fens
Sails on eel power"
