Sheffield. A mundane and ordinary local street used as a main road and utterly excluding to children. No kids in view because of the obvious.

Last night I watched Channel 5 highway cops shows with my 7 yo (his choice)!

Reminder how dangerous police are, esp driving. Creating chases at 90mph through local streets.

While an officer said a pursuit the wrong way up a trunk road was stopped as “putting the public in danger is a big no-no”. 🙃

“stop people moving around” is an interesting worry.

Since most people say road danger is what stops them moving around more in their own local streets.

It could also go beyond transport use of “getting past” and recognise that vehicles parked on pavement, however wide, is encroaching on the free space people could use.

This has definitely been true for me. 9 years with a family cargo bike has made so much possible and enjoyable.

It’s also deeply limited by traffic danger. My wife feels far less freedom from this than I do because almost no routes feel really safe. She uses it more as a least-worst option.

I should clarify, the announcement only relates to England.

Wales has its own devolved powers which have still not yet delivered clear pavements there either.
