There should be some dread weighing heavily on you if you are upholding injustice, oppressing the poor and marginalized, abusing power, or disregarding the dignity of all people. The ‘Shadow’ is but a small and passing thing — where will you be standing when it’s gone?

Tolkien writing of light and high beauty being “for ever beyond” the reach of the Shadow should strike fear into the heart of evil and kindle hope in anyone who strives for goodness.

Sauron feared hope, a point underscored by his fear of Aragorn whose elvish name literally meant ‘Hope’.
