Hmmm interesting… It just occurred to me that I’d probably do well to crash some random end of year parties next year 🥳

Excited to see the piece @divyampersaud.com and I wrote reflecting on SSiC 2023 (funded by EASST and RAS, hosted back in Jan 2023) in this issue of EASST Review. Read more here: easst.net/easst-review... #sts

Love Jana’s piercing analyses on higher education’s crisis of legitimacy janabacevic.net/2024/09/04/r... and on existing while female janabacevic.net/2019/06/12/e.... So true. I’ll proudly continue to practice my RBF. Relevant for dealing with both. @unsocialtheory.bsky.social

In my opinion, the kind of political rhetoric on display shows that real leadership is not about tough soundbites or cheap solutions. It’s about wanting to see a problem from multiple angles, and about building bridges. Exactly what we do and teach in the social sciences.

In my opinion, this week’s parliamentary debates on the education budget touch on a very fundamental question:
What is good leadership in this day and age? And what role do universities and social sciences play in this?
sarahderijcke.nl
The PVV also prefers an emphasis on STEM subjects. Now “various universities are overflowing with humanities and behavioral sciences, often with international students, who are displacing our own students and occupying student rooms.”
sarahderijcke.nl
Sometimes it’s really a case of using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Last week, for example, PVV member of parliament Van der Hoeff said he wants “more modest universities.” I assume he means we should shrink in size, but also that we should adopt a less critical attitude.

What is good leadership in this day and age? And what role do universities and the social sciences play in this? As dean of a Faculty of Social Sciences, I find myself in the midst of a storm of debates about internationalization and the future of higher education.

As part of my first week as dean I gave a short speech at the New Year’s reception last week, a tradition at our faculty. I wanted to create a bit of depth, but also wanted to give people a good ‘hook’ to approach me afterward. So I reached out with a colourful metaphor. tinyurl.com/35b8zxxm
