We should first recognize that gender codes are socially constructed. Clothing is not inherently masculine or feminine—codes are contextual and can change over time. Aristocratic men once wore bright red heels. Then they became womenswear until that notion was challenged again.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

The anti-DEI fervor is based on the racist assumption that lesser candidates are being chosen over more qualified white men. It doesn’t even occur to these goons that the program might find talent that otherwise wouldn’t have been recognized and recruited.
