It’s Banned Books Week, and I don’t need you to buy my book as a solve for it (but buy it if you want to! That’s still extremely cool of you)—I need you to show up for your public libraries and your schools!

Photos never do my wildflower patch justice, but I keep trying. I think I’m gonna have to try painting them sometime soon, if it doesn’t get too cold too fast.
Photo of a patch of wildflowers, including black eyed Susans (yellow/orange petals with dark brown centers), blanket flowers (brown centers with petals starting pink in the center and orange on the ends) and calico asters (clusters of small lavender flowers with narrow petals).

I mean, I feel like they’re mostly mundane reasons, but they’re reasons nonetheless 😆

I can’t share the newer stuff I’ve been working on for Reasons, so here are some old MG spot illustrations—I love working in black and white. #kidlitartpostcard

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...

I see a lot of artists on here questioning whether they should be promoting their work in the current political climate.

The answer is always yes. ART: books, music, film, painting, sculpture - all of it - is the most accessible way to communicate complex topics, ideologies and emotions.

It’s coming along nicely.
A photo cropped close to show an embroidered part of a shirt. The edge of one sleeve is shown, rolled up at the hem and stitched in place with a decorative stitch. In the front of the shirt, grass and flowers have been embroidered spilling out from the printed illustration from the book Miss Rumphius.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

I obviously needed more bookish apparel to personalize.
A t-shirt with an illustration from the book Miss Rumphius. In the foreground a woman is bending to look at blue, purple, and pink lupines surrounded by green grass. The background is pale green, showing hills and water with pine trees and a small building. Sitting on top of the shirt is a plastic container holding embroidery floss in colors that match the illustration.

This is a mistake I see ALL THE TIME so if you’re drawing a spider web, listen up:

I made my pink hoodie cooler. I just have to wait for it to dry… (it’s oil based ink so it will take awhile.)
The photo shows the back of a pink hoodie stretched over a small table. Stamps resembling book spines line the bottom, one stack of books has a teacup on top. Above the row of books is a stamp of an open book with sparkles coming out of the pages.

This is the reminder I needed today.
Yellow post it note on a brown surface with a wood texture. The message on the note reads “it takes the time that it takes.” Signature at the bottom SarahLuAnnArt

"Goodnight nobody. Goodnight mush." 🥣

Finished my embroidery project inspired by one of my all-time favorite picture book spreads.

Shout out to @sarahluann.bsky.social for answering my question concerning types of thread. Do check out her embroidery art!

Thanks… it’s actually something I feel like I struggle with but I’m glad that you think this one works!!

I made a zine! With my own hands! It’s different seeing my art on a page instead of a screen. I like it. Remind me to do this more often. #kidlitartist #zine
A hand holding a zine, made of white printer paper folded in half and bound with string. The cover has the title “IN THE BOX” with the image of an open cardboard box obscuring the bottom part of the letters. At the bottom is the authors name, Sarah LuAnn Perkins.

I love this addition—the first draft gives you something to work with. But you gotta make it exist first!

if a block of stone (or a pile of shapeless clay) is the material from which sculptors work, it's not the blank page that is our base material, it's the *first draft*.

In case any of my fellow creatives also needed this reminder:

I know I didn’t sign it, but I’d appreciate it if you credited me as the creator. People keep taking my photo and sharing it as if it’s their own and it’s annoying 🤷‍♀️

My alt account got a userpic update because I was bored… and the photo was so old it was from before I wore glasses 🤓
A drawing in white and dark green of Sarah’s face in profile facing left. She wears glasses, earrings, and has short messy curly hair. The eye is looking out at the viewer with a slight smile.
